We have had some early falls and May has been cooler than normal so some ski areas have been able to open early.
A small club area, Manganui opened first(club field in North Island, I've never been there) , and then Mt Hutt opened yesterday - Saturday 30th May. Most of the ski areas were not geared up to open this early,
here is an article on Mt Hutts early opening
They are closed today as a storm has blown in, too windy but 2000 people got to enjoy their first day on skis for 2009.
My home mountain Treble Cone, is due to open June 27 but might have to go elsewhere to get in some early skiing, I bought new skis at the end of the season last year that have not seen snow. Spindrift and Cloudpeak influenced me enough to cross to the other side, I have graduated from 70mm underfoot to 95mm, with some K2 misbehaved. They are very pink and black with hippie style graphics, but once I get them covered in snow no-one will notice the grpahics are more suited to someone half my age :-)
Sorry no pics ... I wasn't there. Only snow I have seen is the dusting on the top of the hill from home, and not even to slide on.
