Example - someone posts a reply to my thread, I want to follow up privately. I click on the user name - goes to their profile - but no option to send a PM.
Am I missing something?

You hit the nail on the head with an unfortunate weakness of the Facebook integration. It's not currently possible to send private messages to Facebook users. You can still leave a message on that user's Bulletin Board which they will receive via email if they have verified their email address.
If that Facebook user has their privacy settings such that you can access their public Facebook listing, you can also message them directly through Facebook. So for example, if you're looking to message John Doe, you might be able to see his public FB listing link under "My Website" on his profile.
Sometimes, depending on the individual user's Facebook privacy settings, they will appear as "Facebook User (Private)". Sometimes logging in with your own FB Connect account will allow you to see their name and account link - this simply means that individual has their privacy settings so that only Facebook users can see their details.
Apologies that this is a bit cumbersome right now. We are working to find a solution to the problem.
Let me know if you have any questions. You can find a bit more about Facbook Connect in this tutorial.
