Odd little symbols?

All right, what are these strange little graphics that appear in my editing box every time I open it up? A new set appears each time I open the editing window, and another set appears when I open the full-screen editor, and each time I hit "preview." They appear only in the editing window, while nothing unusual appears in the preview window, or when I submit the post. It's been going on for over a week now.

These are only minorly annoying. I usually just delete them, but since they don't show up in the post anyway, there's probably no need even for that. But what are they?

Here's a screen shot of this post editing screen, previously refreshed ("previewed") twice:

Are these a bug, or a feature?

Best regards,
Bob

Out of curiosity, I hit the "edit" button after posting the previous post. All of the original odd little graphics--that do not show in the post--remain in the editing screen, plus two more new sets (they always appear in pairs, but this time there were two new pairs, in addition to the ones there originally).

I note that, while they do not show in the submitted post, they do take up space--they add an extra line for each new pair. I deleted them for this post, bringing the text to the top of the window (note the space above and below the text in the previous post).

They're nothing, but they're driving me nuts!

Bob - Did you start this post by copying and pasting from Word?  Are you getting it when you edit any of your posts or just some of them?

After further research, we discovered two things:

This has been happening to FireFox users using WYSWIG editors of all types (FCK, TinyMCE, and others) all over the web for about a month.

The only posts in the database this seems to have happened to are two of yours.

That's all we were able to find so far.  The best guess at this point, is that some form of malware is responsible.  I found two reports of fixes; the first claims to have resolved the issue with an antivirus/antispyware scan; the second uninstalled firefox with a 3rd party uninstaller and reinstalled it.  These are pretty much stabs in the dark, at this point.

We'll let you know if we learn anything more.

Thanks for the replies, guys. So it sounds like it's a bug in my computer.

No, Ted, it was not pasted from Word. The symbols appear every time I open or refresh an editing window--new post, new thread, or edit post--and they are there the moment the window opens, before I've typed anything. I don't recall exactly when they first appeared, but it may well have been a month. I've just been deleting them routinely, which is why they have not appeared in any of my posts prior to today.

I have been using Firefox. I just checked, and they do not appear in Internet Explorer. As I recall, Mozilla just recently installed an update to Firefox. That may well have been when the problem started--can't be sure.

For what it's worth, the "things" are little graphics or text boxes. When I click on one, resizing handles appear, and I can enlarge the box, but the little "ab" symbol inside remains the same size. Again, they always appear in pairs. I just hit "preview," and two more appeared, as usual.

I'll explore the cures you've pointed out. Thanks again--sorry to trouble you!

Best regards,

Bob

If it helps, here's the source script for these odd "things":

<p><input type="hidden" id="gwProxy" /><!--Session data--><input type="hidden" id="jsProxy" onclick="jsCall();" /></p>

<div id="refHTML">&nbsp;</div>

<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p><input type="hidden" id="gwProxy" /><!--Session data--><input type="hidden" onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" /></p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>

Wow--now that's even stranger. I had deleted the "things" when I opened this window. When I pasted in the script and hit "preview," the preview post window looked just like the editing window before I hit preview...but the editing window now shows two sets of two of the little buggers--but no source script. Here's the screen shot:

Puzzling....

Best regards,

Bob

Hey...it looks like it worked! I've uninstalled Firefox with the Revo Uninstaller, from the advice in the thread Frank linked to. Then I reinstalled Firefox and logged back into EpicSki. This is the first post, and the "odd things" are gone.

Thanks for all the help, everyone. I'm still curious what the "thing" was, but I'm glad to be rid of it!

But wait, let me hit "preview" and see what happens....   Eureka--problem solved!

Best regards,

Bob

There's now word circulating that this was due to a firefox plugin called "BrowserHighlighter", which may be installed with skype.  References here and here.

For whatever it may be worth, the uninstall/reinstall advice did clear up the mysterious problems I'd described nearly a year ago.

But now, in the last couple weeks, "the things" are back in my Firefox browser again, behaving just like before. I'm now using Firefox 3.6.3. The other browser I use regularly these days is Safari, but this particular problem doesn't appear there.

I suppose I'll just do another uninstall/reinstall again--unless there is any new information that anyone can pass on to me about this annoying little bug.

Anything?

Best regards,
Bob

[edit] PS--just noticed the preceding post again and yes--I do have the Skype Browser Highlighter plugin installed. Also, if it helps, I have not deleted the "little boxes" now in this edited post. They show as before in the reply window--two little red-framed boxes with the letters "ab" in both of them. After posting, they just show as a blank space at the bottom of my post

Yep, the last I heard, Skype Browser Highlighter was the culprit.

Thanks, Frank. I can get rid of that Highlighter easily enough--never use it anyway. Actually, I don't even really know what it's supposed to do!

Best regards,
Bob
