A Basin April 24-27

Had a chance to travel to Denver last weekend so I was able to get some good April skiing at Arapahoe Basin. Although the forecast called for rain and snow from Friday through Monday, I experienced only some flat light cloud coverage on Friday but otherwise blue skis with some clouds through Monday.

The snow was harder then expected for April but coverage was great on groomed runs and good otherwise. I was impressed that Montezuma had good coverage although each day we experienced variable snow conditions. Of course, you could find a rock or two if you didn't keep your eyes open especially on the East Wall.

It snowed Saturday and Sunday nights leaving 1-3 inches of fresh on top that added a mid-winter feel to the last two days. In fact, Monday it was below 25 degrees thanks to some strong winds.

All in all, the trip was a great combination of low-key, late-season scene (complete with "Beach" parties in the parking lot) and some fresh snow. A-Basin still is my favorite along the front range.

Awesome spring skiing at AB. Son and I were there for two days earlier in Apr, first time ever. Really enjoyed it. Not only true double black diamond terrain in Pali, but fun all over including little rock gardens under East Wall. Montezuma Bowl hit my sweet spot, which is a notch down from double black. Scenic Founders Ridge very doable by upper intermediates in good snow (pic below). Love places where you can park a few steps from a chair. Lot of history in that great, old base lodge. Just wish I had a sherpa's lung capacity.

Up on Founder's Ridge:

Ditto on all that A-Basin is, and isn't. Best little ski area in CO?

One of the best anywhere.

About the best combination of vibe, snow and terrain you're going to find.

I have one day to ski on the front end of a business trip from Phoenix to San Francisco on Wed May 13.  I am thinking of diverting through either Denver or Portland or Bend and skiing A-Basin, Timberline Lodge, or Mt Bachelor.  Squaw will be closed and Snowbird will not be open on weekdays by that week. Any suggestions?
