After a few years of dreaming I finally got a chance to drop Corbets this year. I had never been to JH but always knew I would. I did it in the last week of the season. I was told it was skiing very large, it can vary depending on snow pack and it looked it. My first impression was get me the hell out of here!!!! It was frightening especially after I look at where I was standing when I first looked down, it was right on a cornice that looked like it could break away.
For me it looked like a cathedral of granite and snow with it's high vertical walls and it felt that way to me because I had dreamed about it for so long and held it as such a hallowed place.
I ended up droping in from skiers right there was a little slide in area about 4 feet down from the highest point.
From here you need to rotate in the air as you drop because you are facing 180 degrees in the uphill direction. The drop was a lot bigger than it looked in pictures or in clips I've seen especially from the right. As a buddy said "when you first look down you just want to go and hug your mom"
I was in the air for a long time time, enough to wonder when I was going to hit the snow. Fortunately it was super soft because I was going to do it no matter what! Next thing I remember was the impact, even though it was soft it shook me up a little I did 3 quick turns and I was so far down the couloir I was disapointed because I wanted to be deep in there and soak in the moment. I was so thrilled I did it and didn't get hurt the rest of the weeks deep powder turns were icing on the cake!!
I will remember it forever!!
Anyone else have memories? I'd love to hear them!!
