Let's hike the Appalachian Trail. This could be a one, or multi-day event. Here's a map:

Thoughts?

A guy from REI came to our cub scout meeting to give us camping tips.  He said last year he hiked the WHOLE THING from Georgia to Maine.  I think he said it took about two and a half months.  Hiking part of the NC  leg and a visit to Grandfather Mountain is on the list of gotta do with the kids someday soon.   Great idea Marcus, and fits well with your mission to get in shape.

This Saturday 4/25 (flat,  out&back hike):

The One Day Hikers are out:  http://onedayhike.org/index.html

My plan is to start from Point of Rocks at 10 am, hike down to the Monocacy Aqueduct where the canal crossed the river by 12 am,  cheer some friends, then back to Point of Rocks by 2-3pm.

Optional stop at Tarara winery afterwards.

Total distance: optional, plan for 12-15 miles.   Elevation change: ~30feet.    Need: 3 liters water, light snack (no water on trail).

I'm in, Marcus -- good idea.

I've been on the road every damn week since mid-march, but this weekend, after my half marathon in Nashville (I'm SO gonna get my arse kicked), I'm fairly free (I think).

I'll be doing this hike on Sunday. It should be a pretty good time. Water will be good, ~1,200 ft elevation change, only about 7 miles total.

Might even take my fly pole for a walk...

I'll check in here often to see if a convenient date is scheduled. Right now I've got a lot to do..... a little furnace fire last week wrecked a little havoc in my life. I've been living in a motel nearby wishing it were in CO or UT.

Everything is fine, some smoke damage and plastic fumes but why do these things happen in the middle of the night??? We're back in the house now but the new furnace won't be in until next week and the major spring cleaning will continue. Still not sure if the carpets should be replaced...or the beds. Right now it smells like the cleaning crew just left.

Sorry for the

Sorry to hear that LHC, sounds like major havoc (or should I say HVAC?

Good idea!  Starting with a one day event will probably increase turnout.

Another way to look at it is if it happened during the day while you were all out, you might have lost the whole house.  This way, it was only the furnace, some smoke damage, and super smelly fumes.  I'm glad you guys are OK.  Sounds like you need to take a hike to clear your heads and get your mind off things.  Good thing we're planning one tomorrow.

I would really love to meet up and hike tomorrow but a good friend of mine is receiving his Masters in Psychology in a graduation ceremony tomorrow. I'll be on hand to celebrate the occasion.

As for being in the house at the time of the fire, I was lobbying hard to take a family skiing vacation last week and even suggested doing what Jim and Vince just finished, auto trip out west. So yes, we could have had a lot more damage if my skiing addiction would have prevailed over financial common sense. I'm still unemployed and I just talked to my foreman and things are still not looking good. Thanks to Federal unemployment extensions we will be able to continue to make ends meet. On the other hand, I'll have some free time to hike and bike and both cost a lot less than skiing.

Enjoy your hike tomorrow and give my regards to comprex.

Oh, oh, if anybody is interested in volunteering some time to do some trail work on X-C, hiking, and biking trails on Laurel Mountain and the surrounding Forbes State Forest PM me for details and dates. I don't have them in front of me right now but I'll post dates later in a separate thread.

Noofus and I have wanted to do the AT for a loong time. We have started on some parts of it, but realistically realize its going to be many years before we have 6 months free. However, that hasnt kept us off the trail. One of our favorite local section is the Pinnacle - great views and the hike up is decent. There is company from folks who come up the easier fire trail - but all in all its a pretty sweet hike  - I nominate it as a good group hike to lunch and back :)

We are free on saturdays - I do need to get my brace done before I can get the boots back on - but am looking forward to an injury free season.

Jane and I will be up for some AT hiking starting in late June. How about Bake Oven Knob area? And for Phil, it runs right over Blue. Maybe he'd like it better without snow.

OK, we need two hikes:

1. MD->PA starting down south & running north

2. Eastern PA

I will gladly do either one the last weekend in May. Overnight if anyone is interested.

I am heading up to 7 springs Memorial Day weekend,  I want to go hiking at Laurel Mountain - I wonder if 7 springs will open it up for the 09/10 season.

Anyone going hiking in the rain, then?

Just back from two nights down in the Shennies. Pretty amazing break in the weather. Rained on friday but was just perfect saturday and sunday. Did about 1.5 miles on the AT (nicest hikes are off the AT down there) and some serious miles on other trails. Really great weekend with friends. Got to chat with several NOBO '09 guys - its been on wet spring... glad im not doing a through this year.

Lola and I went "orienteering" in Saturday, that is something I could see this group getting into.

Did you do it the easy way with a GPS? I used to be pretty good with map & compass in the Boy Scouts and in the Army. I might want to give it a try.

That's great, Phil! How'd ya do?

Lori and I have talked about taking a course.  CMC offers courses here, and I could really use a refresher.

Would it qualify as Orienteering if you utilized a GPS?  I understood orienteering to be "Map & Compass"[period]

The orienteering was indeed fun. When you use a GPS is it called Geotracking. We were out on a beginner course that they set up to give you a feel for the sport. I would do it again.
