PSIA D-Team Tryout Results(?)

The National Alpine Demonstration Team Tryouts started yesterday (Apr 26) at Snowbird. It would be great if anyone out there knows how it is going, and could post the results here as they narrow the field and make selections. About 65 people are competing for the positions. Is there anyone with the information willing to practice their journalistic skills? Otherwise it takes a long time for the information to filter down. About 65 people are competing for about 12 positions (fewer positions than before).

Our own roto is trying out and Weems is there cheering on the Aspen/Rocky Mountain delegates. I expect they'll check in but not during the tryout.

Nolo - Thanks. This brings up an issue I have with this Forum – I don’t know who ‘Roto’ is. I probably know the person, but not by the ‘Roto’ name. Nor do I know who ‘Nolo’ is. The profile information doesn’t help. Do they really want to remain anonymous, or what? :

Nolo's a holdover from an earlier time that I like remembering. My name is Joan Rostad.

I wouldn't presume to tell you who Roto is, that's his business, but I do know he coaches at Stevens Pass and he knows a lot about skiing.

If you read this, good luck, Roto!

Then I think it must be Stan, Lane, or DL. They are all trying out (and male and coach at Stevens Pass), and I wish them all luck. I saw them all last weekend at Snowbird, when I was at the Academy. There are some great skiers and teachers contending for those slots.

Greetings from Snowbird! I have been watching the tryouts and what a treat! Fantastic skiing and huge energy. Last night they made the "first cut" for lack of a better term and here are the survivors:

Deb Armstrong
Jeb Boyd
Kurt Fehrenbach
Chris Fellows
Mike Hafer
Megan Harvey
Scott Kane
Dave Lyon
Charlie Macarthur
Bobby Murphy
Troy Nedved
Ben Roberts
Jim Schanzenbaker
Sean Warman
Terry Barbour
Andy Docken
Nate Emerson
Nick Herrin
Chris Kastner
David Lundberg
Kevin Mitchell
Kate Morrell
Doug Pierini
Michael Rogan
Michael Rose
Don Roth
Carl Underkoffler
Nelson Wingard

Disclaimer: I am in no way officially connnected with the tryouts and I hastily typed in the list this morning before I even had my coffee! Huge apologies for any errors or omissions.

Thanks, DM. I see a lot of friends on that list. Hope they make it through Phase 2.

I'm pulling for Cris Kastner and Nelson Wingard because they are both from my former ski school and Crystal Mountain.

Do you know what is left of the Nordic Guys or the AASIs? Stowe has 4 people pout there, and bith of our Alpine guys are off the list. Oh well, there's always next time...

Rob Sogard and Katie Fry, who have been on the last two teams (8 years), are now team coaches and are automatically on the team so they won't show up on the list. Katie is the teams manager (managing the Alpine, Nordic and Snowboard teams), and Rob is the Alpine coach. I think the others from the last Team who are not on the 'first cut' list retired and didn't tryout.

Thanks Downwardly Mobile. I look forward to your next report. What is the snow like now? What kind of "super-human" skiing/tasks are they doing and what terrain are they using?
I know one of the tasks is Short radius turns following a GS path.

Aloha all

I tried out and as you can see "Roto" does not appear on the list. Ha. Niether does my real name (Stan).

Had a tough first day. Experienced a lot of nervousness etc. to a degree I never had before. It took me until the afternoon to focus past the peripherals to the tasks and really begin skiing them. The afternoon went better and I took the high from that into the second day and skied well. Better than well for a lot of the second day, but my die was already cast as inconsistent. I did not expect to find my name on the list and would not have put it there myself based on my performances. I would have felt differently if my second day had been my first and I had been able to build on that. Next time I'll be much more prepared simply from the experience gained this time; as well as from all the training I will find and create.

I have to say it was an amazing experience. Standing on a cornice next to Deb Armstrong and watching her move so incredibly, directly, deliberately, accurately.. and fast, then being the next one to drop in is something that I could only put into words with more time than I am going to take for this post. See it's not just the terrain that is intimidating, everyone there was in the comfort zone when it comes to terrain, but throw a few outcomes or parameters in there and it's a whole different game.

If you have access to the movie "Bull Durham" just FF to the part where Crash Davis is expalining what it's like to face pitchers in "The Show."

That may give you some perspective on what it's like to face the tasks and terrain selections under the tight scoring of the National Tryouts.

As I am just back now and settling in with the family I will sign off for now. but will post a complete task/terrain list and also detail some of the incredibly beautiful performances those who made the cut laid down. The best in world were truly there.

Good luck and good cheer all. I will post again in the AM

Roto/Stan - I'm so glad you posted. It does sound like a truly amazing experience and I'm looking forward to hearing more. Your second day seems like the skier so many of us have seen and admired.

Most the people on the list are on at least their second try, Roto. You are a hero for laying it on the line with class and grace.
Wow! Can't wait for the next installment, it's really something to hear this stuff directly from one of the people good enough to be there.

'The National Alpine Demonstration Team Tryouts started yesterday (Apr 26) at Snowbird'

'The best in world were truly there.'

Is this now an international event?

There were 2 types of selectors for the 2 day ski cut.

traveling Selectors. Stayed with an assigned group over the two days.

Dee Byrne
Ray Allard
John Armstrong

The 4th traveler was either Razor or Bergie, but not sure which one. I think it was Razor. Both were present, but groups 1-2 didn't interact with 3-4 on the hill.

Selection Teams (groups rotated through them station stylie)

Jay Evans/Dave Merriam
Shawn Smith/Mike Porter
Rob Sogard/Finn Gunderson(USSA/USST)
Calvin Yamamoto/Carol Levine

I have not received any updates since I returned home (had to get back to work as much as I would have liked to stay)

I'm sure theose guys are quite busy 7:45 am to 9:00 pm. So I haven't tried to bother them.

I will let you know as soon as I find out
