I have a choice between 2007 8k in 158cm or 2008 8k in 165cm the 08 is 120-79-103mm r17 @ 165cm and the 07 is 116-79-102mm r16 @158cm my dimension/mass is 5' 4.5" 160 lbs .My skill level is intermediate starting to venture into moguls and gladed trails/off piste and steeper blacks with varied levels of confidence depending on conditions .The price difference is not really enough to factor in I just want the right ski for me and my skill level. Thanks for any input have great summer

Probably 165cm.  The L8K is pretty forgiving and not very stiff.

(For comparison's sake, I'm 5'8", 157lbs.  I use the Legend 8000 in 172cm, but I would consider myself advanced-trying-to-break-into-expert.)

The predictable response on this site will always tend towards the longer of two choices. Regardless.

If I asked such a question I would be told to buy a ski a foot longer than I am tall.

I ski a 178 cm Mythic Rider, Advanced to Expert Level in the west, 5 9" 190 lbs 45 years old, moderately aggressive skier. I'd say take the 2008 as you get a little more shovel and at 160 lb I'd say the ski would not likely be to much for you and you may like the stability at speed or if you venture into off piste it will give you a little more ski to stand on. If you like to ski bumps or make a lot of short turns the 158 may be better but I demo'd a 172 and a 178 in the MR and really ended up liking the extra length even in the bumps, sometimes it seems like it's a gentler ride with more length.

My two cents....Lee

for this ski yes, but I have seen other skis where the advice tends toward the shorter model.

I haven't skied the 8 K, but based on the info here told a friend who is bigger than you that he would be fine with the 184 '07 even though he thought he prefered something under 180- he is very happy with the 184...

"Predictable" in this case is only because it's right for this specific ski.

Just for you, I'll recommend that you buy this ski a foot shorter than you are tall.  How about that?

I am past that. Length is what I know works for me. Being 165cm tall, I won't just ski a ski that is 180cm just cuz some level 9 guy says it works for him.

Too many people on this board don't really see that not everyone is an expert focused on speed and float. My skiing days began just five seasons ago. So I know/rememeber what it means to be a struggling intermediate. With that said, don't tell some level 5 guy that he should get an advanced/expert level ski in size long. Just saying folk should temper their advice to the questioner.

Hey good point , let me provide more details about me and my ability which I should have included before . My age will be 42 I'm not very atheletic in the legs , skiing mildly to moderately aggressive depending on conditons and how hard I feel like working my 160cm elan speedwave 8's off the groomers .A concern is being able to flex the 165cm when things get tight .Demo of these models is not possible although I did demo the 2010 sultan 80 in 172cm on afternoon groomers and loose crud , they were nice down the fall line but they were more work than I am use to at low speeds

I'm proportionally the same but only a tad taller. Working on skiing better at the L6/L7 level. I have the 06/07's in 166cm. For the most part, they work very well for me for the last 2-3 seasons. Although, some days I wish I had gone one longer. So, for you, I would suggest the 166cm over the 158cm.

165 I'd say.  I demoed the next size up (172?) and the skis were definitely not too much.  I like a more "poppy" ski so I didn't like these that much, but at your weight and desires you might well like them more than me.  I weigh 175 and ski level 8ish.  I think you'd find the 158's would soon be too short and limiting as you develop and ski more.
