Gear Swap on the new Platform

Thread Starter

Is anyone else getting a little tired of the Gear Swap rules being interpreted and policed in different ways- by non-mod. board members? Now that the new board has to be manually moderated and some are simply replying to existing threads for items (as in a non-supporter stating they too have a second or similar item that a supporter started)?

Policing the first postings by a non-supporter- which is clearly against the present rules is one thing (instead of reporting them to a moderator).

Can the powers to be that make the rules (the mods and administrators) in the "off season" get together and come up with a way to not have every thread over there be a "you are not a supporter" argument, or modify the software code to go back to full moderation- ie the old software limited starters to being a supporter. The new software does not.

If a pole of the supporters is needed, then take one to see how they feel on the matter- obviously some feel strongly enough to be accusing general members that have not stepped up to supporter level of taking advantage of the board or spamming the list.

I see no difference to replying to a WTB or PSA section by a non-supporter (which does not get jumped on by every supporter) and the replying to a thread on the main Swap. If the mods and admins can't either clarify the rules or clarify the what is allowed then the moderation should be done by the moderators (and I know how much work and time good moderation takes)- the violations should be reported to mods not replied to by non mods asking why they are posting replies. It is getting old fast.

Rshea, I agree.

I know that the huddler team is working on this because we just had a chat with them about it.

In the mean time, we appreciate your assistance by reporting stuff that we miss.

If you see me or Phil on line, then feel free to contact one of us to look at something.

Gear Swap is quite busy and we've had a difficult time catching everything.

Thanks for your input on this, we really do appreciate it.

Trek,  actually, gear has not been that busy.  There hadve been a few instances of MANY items by a single member, but all in all not that many overall posters.

BTW, I have butted in more than once, and done my fair share of reporting posts as well and, RShea, I'll continue to butt in until there is a viable soultion to one of the things that did work effectively that now does not.

I pointed out that "hey----I've got one of those for sale too... "  or the ' I'm listing for friend--here let he/she/it respond (now that I got the thread opened)" loophole quite awhile ago under the old plaform.  Phil did an admirable job of policing it then---but you know, those are things that we all have to watch for as they are much harder to find and moderate..  'tis easy to catch the non supporter as thread started.

Here is one idea that I, personally, would like to see implemented---dredged up 3 year old item for sale and asking if you still have them!

I think there should be some time limit after which they listing goes stale and can't be responded to.

Chances are probably close to 100 % that the item is no longer available after two full years!  make the thread dead after --- I don;t know---90 days???

I'm also quite sure that will prove impossible in the current platform---if we can't get permissions set for a specfic section of the forum, I'll guess that something like an aged thread closing would also be un-doable.

my inflation/recession deflated $.02

What's that $.02 really worth J?

I agree that outdated threads should be closed so they can't/won't be bumped.

In other areas of the forum this has been interesting, in the gear swap, not so much, eh?

I'll see what I can to do some clean up in there today while I'm chillin here at home.

oh!! about .003 right about now

Glad to see ya back to 'work' after all the fun you've been havin--

Agree that in the gerneral discussion there are many old gems out there that can be quite interesting to resurrect!   In gear it is usually too late and aside from one instance, where the OP did respond that he had been to lazyt to list on Ebay---and therefore the items were still available---in general, the resurected post goes unanswered.

And then there s the collateral issue of the ads that start based on 'new' activity.

while i'm on a roll

Unlocked cell phone sellers from HK adds are truly getting annoying.  I bet I personally report at least two a week, sometimes two at a time and I'm willing to bet you that 0.02 from last response, that there bare many more that ya'all catch before I see them!

And Last but not least---can I have a personal spelling checker please?? one that religiously follows me around and corrects all teh the's I misspell and such.

thansk for your attention

Sorry, but this is one of the little snafoo's  we are dealing with in going to the new platform. I have tried to keep up with the non-supporters posting in there but some stuff does slip though and usually is caught by the second set of eyes. Unfortunately, as you say, some of the posters are interpreting the guidelines to their own benefit. We are doing our best, and we appreciate your patronage.

Now Phil you do know the spelling/meaning of the word/acronym "snafu" right?

Sorry I thought it was a typo.  Situation Normal All Fouled Up  (not "fouled" I think.)  It's an old Army term I believe.

There's also FUBAR  - which is f(ouled) up beyond repair.

I am as I stated not blaming the moderators (it is a thankless job in some ways)- they have a life outside of Epic I know, but at least for the time being can a PM be sent off to the Mods- or as one of the mods pointed out - if you see one on line send info on the thread and have them take care of it.

Maybe until the behind the scenes decisions are made a sticky or 2 would help- always at the top of the forum in question. Many new members of the board may not even see the info up above (that has to be scrolled through to read the full text too). But when there is 5 posts discussing the "violation" or if there even it a "violation" that gets old. If nothing else the supporters could even have their own in the supporters lounge area that can't be seen unless you are one and log into the site with your users name.

I know of other boards I am on that you can't see or do certain things based on your level- some use points systems- you can earn points with a helpful posts, or you can't modify an initial listing in some forums (like swaps that you could go back and change say the asking price) unless the moderators agree. Other boards have information required- like a real email address (not a free address) and maybe more requirements like a min. time on the board or min. number of posts. All things to make it a better community (supporters and non-supporters alike).

But what does the A stand for?

oops   should have googled first.

f(ouled) up beyond all repair (or recognition) is what wikipedia.org says.

edit: shouldn't there be a rule against non-supporters correcting supporters?

Fouled Up Beyond All Repair

It is not FUBAR, it will be fixed, it is on Huddlers list of things to do.

hey phil,

i was responding to the "what does the "A" stand for post",   (post 15, by RShea)

should have quoted it.

I thought FUBAR was

Fouled

Up

Beyond

All

Recognition

As are as gear swap drop dead dates go, I think 90 days is too short, thinking 1-2 years would be better.

When I was a freshman, they put out a FUBAR list generated from the best looking pictures in the facebook...pretty sure it translated much differently than anything suggested here. (first part is pretty easy, the second part was Before Anyone Realizes IIRC).

I think this thread is getting FUBAR off the original topic though now...
