Hardbooting is a blast. He may or may not have had ski boots on. Snowboard hardboots look like ski boots a little bit.
A lot of the reason that the worlds are "separated so far" is that hardboots are not the optimum freestyle setup. That does not mean that you cannot do FS in hardboots, it is just not really what they are made for. Hardboots are for carving, freeriding, racing, etc. They give you more control and power, especially at high speeds. They are generally used with narrower boards at higher angles.
It is great fun and I would bet that there are a bunch of guys in your area that would love to help you get started into the "dark side" of snowboarding.
