Purcell Heli Day March 19, 2009

I will start this trip report with a question - do you remember what you got as a high school graduation gift? Neither do I, but I’m guessing our son won’t soon forget his as a day of heli skiing was his graduation gift. And, uh, I had to go with him as well. Hey - I was cashing in my 10 year anniversary gift…just 14 years late. I had a deposit in for us way back in July for a day over President’s weekend – but that fell through when my son broke his leg 2 weeks before the ski season. After countless postponements, we had the doctors OK for him to ski, and we finally made our way to Golden, BC an 11 hour drive from Seattle.

The video below is a 2 minute snippet of our Thursday, March 19th day. Not shown is the denser tree skiing we did between the open areas up top and at the bottom since it’s hard to get decent video when snaking through the trees. Although we had hoped for a bit more open terrain higher up, with the weather we had and the high avalanche danger all season, we were content with the terrain we skied. There were 2 groups skiing – everyone else was German (skiing was “toe-ta zoopa!”). Snow was very good up top, excellent in the trees, and then getting a bit heavy down below – but still decent since it was untracked. This was our first ever heli day, and hopefully not our last. The whole crew at Purcell was great – guides Bryan and Derek, and our pilot Bruno. One of the office gals got to tag along on her day off – I can’t think of many jobs where you actually want to go to on an off day, but this is one of them. Hope you enjoy the video. We also hit Kicking Horse and Revelstoke for a day each as well - separate trip report/video may be coming for that as well.

My dad is pretty cool, but he never took me on a heli skiing trip.

This is most definitely a time of your life as father/son that you won't soon forget.

Way to go dad!  Maybe when my 5 year old son is graduating I'll steal your idea

What skis were you guys on for the trip?

Looks like nice low intermediate terrain. Do you really need a heli to get such thing?

Powdah is awesome though....

My guess is camera angle is playing some visual tricks here.  Second, who cares, the kid got to go heli-skiing as a graduation gift and that freaking rocks!  Nice job dad!

Great Vid, Thanks.  Look forward to your take on KH & Revy.

POV footage rarely shows the true pitch of a slope.  Avi danger has been bad most of the season in the BC Rockies.  Heli-skiing is not always about the steep & gnarly.  I'm sure the experience was incredible.

Skis - I rented their Atomic Heli Daddy's (I think that was what they were). They were a bit shorter than my Armadas and fatter. My son used his new Line Elizabeth’s.

Terrain - definitely tame slopes shown on the video. As mentioned, the middle half or third was steeper in tighter trees. To throw that in the video would have been tough as it would have been short bursts of skiing. And frankly, my son said we kind of sucked in the trees. Knowing him, he will have an hour long video production of the entire day done sometime in July – we went for short and sweet for the trip report. He spent 2 nights in the motel just working on the initial chopper scene choreographed with music. Finally, the ride back the guide told me the heli outfit to the south reported many slides the day prior. After hearing stuff like that, I wasn’t complaining about what we skied.

Let’s see…I have a 25th wedding anniversary coming up in 2010…maybe I’ll start dropping a few hints….

Off to Big Sky for a week Thursday...still dumping...woo hoo!
