Gonna ski Squaw 3 days and Northstar 2 days. Any advice on whats good on these mountains. I'm an intermediate skier.
Assuming "intermediate skier" means "likes to cruise blues", at Squaw you might try runs off the Shirley Lake lift. If you're more adventures than that, there are some nice black runs off the nearby Granite Chief lift. That will get you started. After that work your way across the resort (sampling runs along the way) to Red Dog lift and ski Lake View run down to the Resort at Squaw Creek - making a few laps using Squaw Creek lift offers easy cruising at the end the day.
At Northstar, try West Ridge run and turn right into Axe Handle or Luggi's for easy cruising. Otherwise continue straight into Flying Squirrel for a bit more fun. Or, try East Ridge run to The Flume for a nice tree lined run. At the end of the day, we like to ski all the way down East Ridge to Logger's Loop to Cat's Face to the Woods. Takes you all the way to the Village, and much less crowded than coming straight down Village Run.
Your milage may vary, of course. Enjoy, rickp
I found Heavenly to have some pretty good cruising, but then there are lines. I have only skied Squaw on uncrowded days (says locals) so I don't know how they compare in lines, but I think the crusing is better at Heavenly.
I think Squaw has a free orientation ski around at 9am. Get there early and ask at the ski school. I think its free - sssh, its probably the only thing up there that is.
After trying Shirley's, look at trying the Funnel that goes to Shirleys.
I can't make any suggestions about Nstar except go to Alpine Meadows instead.
