Gulmar, Kashmir: Sounds just amazing!!

Hi all,

I found an article about a ski resort in Kashmir, India called Gulmar. I have never heard of it before, but it sounds awesome! According to the article it is fairly untouched and undeveloped which I like. And the powder is supposed to be amazing!

Have any of you been there? If so: How crowded was it? How was the snow? How many lifts was it, and were there good runs for powder available with lifts, or would you have to climb/walk to get the good off-piste conditions? And last: how was the prices compared to other big resorts in America and Europe?

I just love the idea of skiing in India and the Himalayas! It gives me the butterflies just thinking of it!

I wrote an article about Skiing in Gulmarg, Kashmir on my blog (winter-travel.org), where you also can find links to more information and pictures from Kashmir. But I am curious to hear from people who have actually been there and tried it themselves!

Thank you very much!

Hi haaki,

I went to Gulmarg just over a year ago. Stayed about 2 weeks and had some of the best and worst experiences of my skiing life!

Without a doubt, world-class terrain and big, big mountain. Snow quantity was incredible- we had about 2.5 metres over the 2 weeks. I'm not really sure how this compares to their usual conditions (found it hard to get the truth out of most of the locals!!) Temps -5 to -20c so up top was really mindblowing.

The fraustrating thing was that after a big dump, the lift would be closed for up to 3 days so you're being teased big-time! Year before last there were avalanche deaths, and ski patrol is minimal hence the caution on behalf of the authorities.

When the top lift was shut (there are only 2 lifts), we would get into the 4wd with our driver, and just drop off the edge of the road wherever it looked good- all untracked but you're skiing down a mountain that is totally wild- literally through forests. Needless to say, exhilirating but potentially dangerous and I would not want to be in need of anything more than basic medical care there!

Accomodation good but infrastructure is really 3rd world so be prepared for that. You're not going to be soaking in a hot tub at the end of the day. Culturally extremely different to anything I've experienced- was my first time in India- sensory overload the whole time! Locals were generally friendly, and often hilarious...the tourists were Europeans, Aussies and Russians mainly.

All in all, if you're a keen back-country skier and don't need luxury, the place is superb.

Hope this helps. There's footage of Gulmarg on You Tube which may also give you a bit more perspective.
