Cottowoood dump...finally!

Been here in SLC all week. Skiing has been okay but was getting scratchy and not what I expected coming all this way. Still packed pow got creamy some afternoons and still fun! Now yesterday was a blowout. Literally 60 mph winds closed the lifts. 80 folks trapped ont he lift at Snowbird they had to hoist them down one by one on ropes!

But it looks like the snow gods smiled on me we got a foot of fresh overnight and myself and Vince F. are heading out to Alta. I never have been in powder so this is a first for me and I am excited. Yeah, I will probably be wearing a lot of it and probably on my face, but who cares!!!!!

And more is on the way! Now I am trying to figure out how I can stay another week!

Will report back and hopefully have some pics and video of face plants, yard sales, and maybe even a decent powder run. I hope. Any Bears gonna be hitting Alta look for the 6 ' 260' nose guard looking guy with blue/grey parka, black pants, and a gray Head helmet that makes me look like Motor Mouse! Vince looks normal so he's hard to describe.

Alta is great on a powder day -- get out there and enjoy it!  And save some powder for me next week!

If this is your first experience in powder, you'll probably go through the full range of emotions and challenges, but by the end of the day you'll definitely have a huge grin on your face.  Then again, you're a big guy so you may just skip through the difficult part and show the powder who's boss.

Good to hear it!

Ya believe it or not for like 8 years I didn't get a fresh dump of pow out there for my typical trips.  Lately been hitting it right though.  I find it does tire me out more than normal skiing to ski in the pow.  Stay hydrated bigguy!

Weird/scary about the lifts and ropes etc at Snowbird ....

Enjoy your day, You never forget your first Pow day, Tired? I think you might be by end of day!

Have fun John!  First ever trip out west, and first powder day happened to me in January in UT on the day after we arrived.  I don't think I've ever been that tired in my life before, but I had a great time.

Drink lots of water and have a good day!

I'm headed out to Alta/Snowbird tomorrow, staying at the Peruvian. The Power Alert was good news this morning and it's good to hear about it firsthand. It looked like they needed new snow pretty badly, and it never ceases to amaze me how a dump can change a vacation from just OK to ear-to-ear perma-grin.

Have a ball!

Forecast looks like snow showers off and on untill Sat.  Enjoy the powder

I might be at the Peruvian Saturday night.  Kind of depend on how this storm tracks.

WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!! Better than sex! I have a permanent smile, at least for the next month or so!  Wasn't pretty at times but I was whooping like a kid. (I'm 51!)

Thanks Vince F. for getting me to where I needed to be to enjoy this. I owe you big time bud!

I finally did it after skiing for 30+ years. Now I know what its like in all of those ski movies and magazine covers I've seen since 1979.

God, you can take me now I am happy man!!!!!! And I have one more day to do it again. LOL I think I might bust from so having so much fun!!!!!

It was more than a foot for sure and still stashes of untracked that we saw, and yes I am worn out but a real good worn out.

Thanks all of you, for the nice words and tips and encouragement.

Reading this is the next best thing to being there.  Sounds like a day you will remember for a long time!  I'm still buzzing from a powder day at Alta last April -- I remember thinking that if I died that day, it would be as a happy man.

Anyhow, way to go, now get some sleep and head back out there tomorrow for round two!  BTW, it's OK to take your skis to bed with you after a good powder day .

Vince F. has the shots! I want to see them myself. I think there may be a nice wipe out in one of them. They were almost as much fun and getting a good run. I was laughing my azz off! Even lost a ski and had to probe around for it with my pole.

Now Vince is somewhat camera challenged as he tried to shoot video from my camera 3 times but somehow screwed it up each time. But the man can ski and knows where to go. He did get some video on his camera though.

Vince e-mailed me the vids just now so I am downloading them and will try to post them. Not sure how s little help on that.

Yo, Vince, thanks!!!!!!

WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!! Better than sex!

Super, glad to hear you got a great day. I am always amazed at the therapeutic value of a powder day. Heck, I still have a grin on my face from my Alta trip last year - over 5 ft in 5 days.

Have a ball!

The Conz did great for his first time in the powder.  Switched to some fatter "cheater" skis and then did the powder float!  He looked like a kid with a new toy.  I had skied with him on Sunday at Solitude but it was just groomers. While he enjoyed that, his day at Alta created a perma-grin.  When he gets back home his friends will wonder what the deal is with him.  He is now a changed man!

I agree the thread needs the pics, but I am somewhat inept at operating the video camera.  Maybe I should take lessons?

I am glad that he was able to have the "Alta Experience" while he was here. For a while it was looking pretty grim.

We are all jealous of the great day you all had, but when it comes to your first powder day for theconz who could think of taking time for pics. We can all dream of what it looked like. Save the pics for  a non powder day !

Hey Vince thanks again!!!!

I did find a guy who was staying at my hotel, at Alta today and he took a video for me. It ain't pretty but this was only my second day. It felt like just floating. I know I need a lot of work in form and all but I made it all the way down the bowl no face plants today!

Oh, the heavy breathing is the guy taking the video. Not sure what that was all about.........

Video added guys. Link is in above post. Remember only 2nd day in powder, but I felt like a guy in a Warren Miller film even if I didn't look like one!
