I'm wondering if anyone has any views on the Volkl AC30 compared to the Nordica Nitrous? I'm a 6-1", 190lb expert skier (but 57 years old) and ski mostly in Colorado. I have a pair of Volkl Mantras which are great in everything from powder to packed powder but I'm looking to add a pair for harder packed conditions. I had a pair of Volkl 5-stars but they were lost. I tried Nitrous 170's and liked them but thought I could maybe use the 178's. People have recommended the AC30's too but I haven't tried them. Any opinions would be most appreciated. Thank you.

I have not skied the Nitrous (heat it is agreat ski), but I own a pair of the 2009 AC30 170's and I absolutely love them. I ski mostly east coast so I am primarily a groomer boomer (hardpack/ice/crud). The AC30's have excellent edge grip and really rail on the hardpack. While they are pretty easy to ski, they love to be skied hard and really rip down the groomers. I find they have great stability at high speed, and don't chatter on ice.
Now regarding your ski conditions, if you ski in Colorado and want to ski more backside, off piste, I would consider going a little wider, something in the range of 80 - 95 mm under waist. That way you still maintain decend performance on the groomers/hardpack, but will also get some floatation on some powder. Anyway just my opinion.
