Hi folks,

Leigh and I are going from Portland to Gillette WY next week and are discussing going to Big Sky on 90 or south to Steamboat then Salt Lake City for a few days skiing. What are your thoughts on which would be the best stops?

thanks

Ryel

1) See what the weather brings

2) If you like intermediate terrain and great trees - Steamboat

3) Otherwise, Big Sky

I'd second that opinion. It's been a rather shaky year in UT--one week it's dumping 3 feet and the next it's 60 degrees. The past week or so it's been like 50 or 60 so right now I'd skip SLC. Supposedly, the weather is going to turn and a possible snow storm will be rolling in this weekend, so it could change. If you have that much flexiblity in where you're going--go for the snow. I'm surprised you didn't even mention Jackson Hole or Targhee as options seeing that you're going to WY.

If you're doing I-90 through Northerrn Idaho and Montana you pass by lots of fun little ski hills worth checking out.  To top it off the long-range forecast through next week is for many of them to get snow, especially Lookout Pass, which is right off the freeway exit at the Idaho/Montana border.  Other resorts close to I-90 are Silver Mountain (Kellogg, ID, only a few minutes from I-90), Montana Snowbowl (Missoula, MT, 30 minutes from I-90), Discovery (Phillipsburg, MT, 60 minutes from I-90), Red Lodge (Red Lodge, MT 80 minutes from I-90) & Bridger Bowl (Bozeman, MT, 30 minutes from I-90.)  Lookout and Silver are closed Tuesdays & Wednesdays, Snowbowl is closed on Wednesdays.

Bridger is doing well with its snowpack but some of the other resorts on this list have below normal snowpacks.  I would highly recommend skiing there & Lookout Pass.

^^^^^^ Yeah, Steamboats way out of the way and it had to get baked the last few days.
