TR: Chamonix, France 2/15 - 2/19

THE SETTING:

Chamonix, a quaint little mountain town

with big surface lifts,

lots of trams,

HUGE mountains,

and this guy.

Cast of Characters:

The fiancee, yours truly, the sister, the brother in-law

dad (rocking the clear goggles on a sunny day)

and mom came too... but she doesn't ski, so she won't be featured here.

The Story:

Each morning we would leave our hotel

head to the breakfast spot and formulate a plan for the day

then walk across the street and wait for the bus to take us to the lifts.

It didn't snow for about a week before our trip, so the first couple of days were mostly spent on the groomers.

I ventured off the trails into the ungroomed for a bit

the snow was mostly sun-baked crud,

but still plenty of fun

especially when it got steep!

And then finally, on our fourth day out of five,

Powder!!!

There were lots of small features in the terrain that held fresh turns throughout the day

some right under the lifts!

Everyone got in on the action

my sister and brother in-law live in Kentucky, so this was a nice surprise for them!

Even dad ventured "off-piste" for a few turns in the new snow

it was a day to remember!

Our final day was spent cruising in the sun,

enjoying the snow bar,

and watching all the crazy locals.

No doubt this is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been!

*EDIT--- this TR needs BRO stoke, I skied my 183's the whole week and couldn't have been happier!

Absolutely the most awesome ski trip destination anywhere IMO.  If I won the lottery Chamonix would be at the very top of my must ski list.  I only knew one person that skied it a long time ago.  The guy was the USSA National Freestyle Champion at the time and he went on and on about how beautiful the skiing was there.  Ever since then it has been top of my list in dreamland that is..

Jay, you ARE my hero.

BROke level infinity!

I nominate you for the "Luckiest Bear of 2009 Award"

Something about that spot on the top of Brevent must make people take pictures of their skis!

And you're right, Chamonix is an awesome place - I can't believe how lucky I am to have been here for the season and still have two months left!

This is a really interesting photo. It's almost disturbing at the same time as being appealing.

Thanks, this one is taken at the top of that same knoll.  It was a strange place, just sticking up all by itself from the middle of a bunch of blue groomers.  It took a little speed to make the uphill traverse to the peak, but once there it offered fresh turns all day long!  Here are a couple shots of skiing it later that day once the sun was out:

JayPow

Glad you had a good trip.

I notice that you did not mention which resorts you skied.

Did you do Vallee Blanche. How about Grand Montets. if yes - what did you ski

at GM.

Which resort were you on your powder day.
