Choosing a ski length was probably one of the most frustrating things I remember as a beginner. Also, even though I was taking lots of lessons, I found it surprisingly hard to get definitive information from my instructors.
So I started demoing skis, and fell in love with the Volkl Carver Escape. The 155cm felt great, but the shop did not have that length for sale. The shop sales guy convinced me that the 163 cm skis would be fine. Looking back, he was wrong. I'm guessing that many of my bad habits are due to the fact that I spent my first year skiing on skis that were too long.
As I started to become more involved with Epic, I learned that shaped skis are shorter. I heard this a lot, and just assumed it was true. However, when an editor assigned me an article entitled Ski Length Recommendations, I decided to explore the "hows" and "whys" of shaped ski length. I ended up finding some interesting trivia.
