Can't place cursor in edit mode

Thread Starter

I have had this happen a couple times over the weekend, on my laptop that still won;t log in with the 'remember me' box checked.

Anyway, trying to edit a post, I could move the cursor---just no ability to actually get it to stop on the word or letter I needed to edit.  For instance lets say I spelled letter---- "lette" and tried to go back and put the trailing 'r' on the word.  I could not.

So I opened the full page editor and that worked---once.

Bonni had the same trouble last evening with her laptop running a different OS and was never able to actually make an edit.

I have the same issue. Sometimes reclicking the mouse over where I want to edit works and other times not.

Browser: Google Chrome on XP

Terms:

First Character = cursor located prior to first character position of post

Last Character = cursor located after last character of post

Bug: moving the cursor to the First Character causes the cursor to jump to the Last Character when a quote is included in a post.

Steps to reproduce bug:

1) use the quote or multi-quote button to open the Edit window

2) Cursor blinking at First Character (before the quote)

3) Type anything

4) Cursor jumps to Last Character, and your text appears AFTER the quote.

5) Press CTRL+HOME (or click First Character or use arrow keys)

6) Cursor blinks at First Character then immediately jumps to Last Character

If you hit CTRL+HOME and very quickly type something, you can get text to appear at the First Character.

My intermittant missing cursor problem is back.  It show up as the reply window is loading then disappears when I start typing in it.  As before the problem doesn't usually happen when quoting another post, mostly with blank reply editors.

Cross you fingers.   It seems much better today than it has been lover the past week.

i have found that by right clicking and then left clicking it seems to help. Using explorer.

I've found that by clicking Source and then re-clicking it, the problem goes away.  firefox.

If anyone can write out steps to make this happen consistently it would be really helpful for us in debugging it. I've been trying to investigate this but unless I can find the conditions to make it occur it's hard to theorize a fix.

Hoody's format, above, is really clear and concise. It makes a great model for reporting your steps. Thanks for the help!

I don't know what makes it START.  It comes and goes.  I just know how to make it STOP.

for me on explorer, its if I post, then hit the Edit button within a short period of time, say within 5 minutes or so.

So, if you post, then edit the post?  Or try to make a second posting (even in a different thread) too soon?  I tried editing this post right away after submitting it and had no problem. Firefox.

I wonder if the problem being encountered by people in this thread have experienced the following. It is happening to me most of the time. A page refresh sometimes corrects the problem but more often than not I can't enter a post. The editor begins to appear (just a box) but then that disappears and leaves me with this:

No, I can type, I just can't control the cursor.  It happens after the tool bar for the box comes up, before that, there is momentarily a cursor there.
