2 Days in Utah: Where should we go? - Page 2

We'll, we're back from Utah.

We ended up staying at The Canyons (found a deal too good to pass on) for a few nights.  The skiing at The Canyons was disappointing to say the least.  The snow was terrible and the after skiing environment was boring.  After about 4:30 or 5:00 the whole place emptied out.  Very strange.

Day 2 we went over to Snowbird and loved it.  If we were staying in town or closer to BCC or LCC we would have skied there both days or checked out Brighton as we had initially planned.  The snow was better (although it took a few hours to soften up) and it was just a much, much better place for us to ski/ride.  Tons of fun.

We went into Park City on Saturday in search of some signs of life (again, Canyons was dead) and had a good time walking around.  Good beer at the brew pub.

Hopefully I'll get some pics up soon.

Of course, big storm was coming in literally as we were flying out.  Oh well.  Next time....

LOL big storms alwasy come as you leave. Happened to me also. See, you have to fool them.

Say you are staying til so and so they will think you're gonna leave then they will show up to kinda give you the bird on the way out, and you jam them up by staying longer! Thats now my plan...just don't tell the storms!

On at least a third of my trips out there, big storms roll in just as we are departing for the airport to head home.  Another third is no new snow, and the final third is when we fly in just before the storm and hit the jackpot.  So you just have to plan more trips to play the odds!

Aaaahhhhh!!!  Looking at the snowfall this week is making me ill!!

So, we really enjoyed Utah even with the crappy snow.  So we're going to go back next year.  Obviously weather is difficult to predict, but what month is "the best" out in Utah?

So far it looks like March is pretty sweet except for 3/19-3/22!

Thanks!

According to my friend who lives in Park City, February has the most snowfall and March is the second snowiest month.

Sorry was not able to reply sooner. I was in Spain last week, and all I could do was check e-mails. I think that Big Sky/Moonlight Basin is one of the most versatile ski resorts out there if the night scene is not important to you. It has terrain that is suitable for all range of abilities. It has long cruising green and blue runs, tree runs, bumps, and of course those chutes that come off the tram. And especially the chutes. I was quite surprised at how nice the snow was up there although it had not snowed for several days. Lift lines were non existent except for the tram; the challenger lift provided good expert terrain without any wait. One thing that I did not like was the amount of exposed rocks and tree stumps/branches on some of the runs. I saw quite a bit more scratches on the bottom of my skis after the trip.I guess the snow cover this year is not as good. If there were direct flights to Bozeman from Cincinnati, I would definitely go there more often.

Cincinnati and SLC are both Delta hubs so there are multiple nonstop flights everyday. That along with the multiple ski resorts make it my number one ski destination. However, I would be willing to put Big Sky against any US resorts from a purely skiing criteria.

      Glad you enjoyed Utah.

SNOWBIRD !!!  Went to Snowbird in February first time. THAT PLACE HAS REAL SKIING!!!!!  Can't wait to go back planning on 4 trips next year.  Definitely going to wear some kind of oxygen bottle, I thought at times I was having a heart attack. Being from the EAST I just couldn't believe the SNOW! Went for a snow groomer ride with the night shift and I just amazed at the consistency of the snow when the snowcat dropped it's blade and starting pushing the snow. It just piled up higher and higher and then just spilled over the top & sides of the blade with no packing or clumping. Sort of like granulated cotton. I grew up in Western NY where we got Lake Erie lake effect snow storms all winter. Remember walking through 3-4 ft of snow. But it was a heavy snow, nothing like Utah Powder.  Definitely buying some powder skis, subscribing to Powder magazine and read as much as I can about powder skiing.   Heard last weekend Snowbird received another powder dump. What a place!
