This, unfortunately, has to be a budget trip since we blew our funds in Big Sky earlier this year (crazy expensive there!!).
Days Inn South in Sandy is a reasonable choice and on the road that leads to Big Cottonwood Canyon.
A slightly better choice is Extended Stay a few blocks away. Both are $50 - $55 a night.
You'll pass Canyon Sports on the way to BCC and can get your discount tickets there. Better deal on tickets can be had with the Superpass (perhaps sold where you stay) if you plan to hit Snowbird.
One quick caution, when you say "blue / black" keep in mind Snowbird and Alta's "blue / black" are like others blacks. While you may decide to go to the bird, it may not be best to start there.
I'll 2nd Snowbasin for all reasons noted, but it's just over an hour from Big Cottonwood. Solitude if it's a Saturday.....no one goes there and it's a really fun, low key place. Skip PCMR, Canyons, and Deer Valley (no boards at DV either). It's not worth the drive......do that when you have more time.
The Big Cottonwood bus stop/parking is on the left just as you leave "town" and are about to drive up the Canyon. You can't miss it.
