I've been skiing xc off and on for several years and want to get more comfortable off the groomed trails and out into the backcountry. I recently picked up some old skis (Elan DRC 45) with cable bindings, I have a pair of leather boots (Asolo Snowfield) and want to learn how to go down hills with these.

Is it realistic to think that I can learn more than just a snowplow on this stuff? I was planning on heading to the local downhill resort this weekend and playing around on the bunny slopes - should I (can I on this gear?) take a lesson instead? My goal is to eventually do touring, not to go looking for backcountry slopes, but i want more than just a snowplough in my bag of tricks.
