How do I know who's on line???

Thread Starter

I miss the big list of presently active users that appeared at the bottom of the old forums--is there a way to know who's on line at any given time anymore????  It's probably right in front of my nose-but I'm missing it.

Thanks!

It is not in front of your nose, unfortunately. It's missing. It is on the dev team list, however, so I expect to see it return in the future. No promises as to timing, yet.

I'm not very big on the whole "who's on" list.
I just like to know the number of loged on members, and loged on guests, and how many users have visited today.

The whole who's on thing can lead to problems on occasions for people trolling for certain individuals to fight with them.

Best way to see if somebody is on, and it requires more work is to just check their page and see if they have posted recently. =)

I like seeing who is online.  Sometimes I want a quick response to a question from a particular person and I want to PM them, but would pick a different person if the first choice is not online.  I want it more for PM'ing than posting.

Is it safe to assume that the "invisible" feature will also be available when the "who's online" feature is added?   I've not used invisible before but certainly understand why folks might want it.

+1.

Want the 'who's online' back but only with the invisible option.

Interesting. That wold take longer to implement. And we had removed the ability for individuals to make themselves invisible with the most recent site; only a few people were "grandfathered" in to have that capability.

For me, part of the sense that we share this space comes from seeing who is online.  It was also an important moderating tool as 99% of spam came from the newest member shown on that feature.  As far as invisibility, moderators always saw online members whether or not they chose invisibility.  We had set up the program so that only registered members could see who's online.  We also closed off member profiles to unregistered guests and search bots.  I think we would want to limit the who's online feature to registered members in any future implementation.

Why is invisibility important?  If you have someone stalkng you on this site, or any form of personal attack, the moderation team is ready to help.

Some people like to pretend they're not home even when their best friend or relative calls because they aren't feeling quite up to engaging with folks but still might want to listen to the message someone is leaving.  Same goes for not feeling up to exchanging posts or PMs but still wanting to read a couple posts.  That is a benifit that invisible mode allots.  If someone sends you a PM and you don't resond quickly yet they see you online some people take it personally.  I, for one, would not.  Just sayin....

"Online", of course, doesn't actually mean that you're "online". It means that at some point recently (within a timeout limit), you've interacted with EpicSki. If you drop in, then leave right away, you'll show up "online" for a length of time that's equal to the timeout (30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the setting). Therefore, someone who thinks it means that you can or would respond right away is getting the wrong idea.

Given that, perhaps the label needs to be a bit different and more accurate: Members recently here. Or recent activity from... Or something like...

ssh,

Recall, vB used to show last date/time of activity (and the activity) in the users profile.  Maybe that covers it well enough.

Perhaps. I just wonder if most realize that it doesn't actually mean that the user is still on the site. They may not be.

I always thought it meant that they had at least moved from one screen to another in the last five minutes.  That's how it works on this other board I'm on.

On EpicSki, it meant that their browser had requested something from EpicSki within the past 20 minutes (IIRC). In some cases, I know that it wasn't very accurate, but it did its best.

Got to agree with that one. Wow, the option of a stealth mode? hmm....I think I might like that.Of course there's the ability for abuse I suppose and I realize that to the FaceBook addicts such an idea is like a cyanide pill !

Oh, I see it too.  But the "not online" white dot is hard to see in "Classic" mode.  Maybe make it black (as in "off")?

I would prefer two black diamonds rather than one green circle next to my user name.  Maybe have the icon vary by post count..  I know give an inch an they ask for a mile
