Looking to pick up some new skis now that the send-of-season sales have started. I've been very happy with Atomic and Salomon products over the years and am just finishing up year 6 on my XScream Series. I think am pretty much set on either the Atomic Blackeye or Whiteout. The profiles and weight are the same but the Whiteout is a tad more flexible. I'm thinking that might be an advantage for a 47 year old like me.
I'm 5'10", 180lbs, and in decent shape. I'm looking for an all mountain ski but I anticipate at least 70% of my time on the groomers. I'm an east coast US guy and probably won't take the ski on an airplane. I'll just rent if I head west. So whatever I buy has to be decent for hardpack and icy conditions. I'm more of a cruiser and speedster than a slasher but I do like to let 'er rip now and then. I consider myself intermediate to advanced but not expert. I can carve nicely on all but the steepest slopes where I tend to turn survivalist. I used to ski quite a bit but I'm lucky if I get 4 or 5 days in a year now.
My XScreams are too long. Seems when the shaped skis hit the market everyone was saying to drop 10cm from your straight skis. I have 187s and I'm 178 cm tall! The Atomics come in 164s and 171s. I want to carve and not torture these old bones so I'm trying to decide between flex and length. Would I be better served with 171 Whiteouts or 164 Blackeyes? Some other combination?
Any other thoughts I should consider?
