I finally upgraded from my short carving skis (Salomon Speedracer 9) to the High Society FR 179cm and paired them with Look PX12 Jib bindings. I mounted the bindings 1cm behind the freeride line. I bought these skis for soft snow and powder days, but they rip groomers without any drama.
First, I am not an expert skier, so - like most gear reviews - this review can be taken with a grain of salt. The snow at Mt Hood Meadows wasn't great (icey groomers in the morning, corn in the afternoon), but my initial impression of these skis is that they're stiff and love speed. I didn't feel like finding their speed limit, given the icy snow conditions. :p The wide waist and (low slung) )jib bindings required more effort to get the skis on edge, but after a few runs carving long radius turns was easy. I actually think these skis are easier to pilot than my carving skis; they're much more stable and inspire confidence when blasting through crud.
I'm hoping to use them again this week; we're supposed to get several inches over the next few days.
Overall, I think these are great skis. They seem well made; the graphics are simple and understated; the customer service from HSFC has been great (needed some advice for mounting); and the price was unbeatable. I'll probably pick up a pair of the 187s for big snow days.
