Weather Experts needed for utah and jacksonhole

Thread Starter

so i've been holed up in 40 degrees weather for the past 4 days in utah and the snow has been blah. However it looks a like a storm is going to move in on thursday but it'll mostly be rain.. In addition, a couple of my friends are skiing in jacksonhole with similiar weather. so the question is if there'll be snow in utah or should i move north for a couple of days in jacksonhole?

Jackson's lower elevation than LCC?  I'd stay were you are. I'm flying in Friday night because I think it could be good.

I am by no means a "weather expert", but would suggest staying in SLC rather than heading north to JH.

The latest NWS forecast is for snow levels down to the benches on Thursday night and possibly to the valley floors by Friday morning.  This will translate to "all" snow up at the LCC/BCC resorts.

I think you're getting weather info for SLC.  This is the Alta point forecast (for a mid-mountain elevation):

The weather models are suggesting 4-6" for Friday, could easily be double that knowing LCC.

I'm headed to Jackson Hole next weekend (President's Day).  I'll be following this thread next week to see if they get any fresh (had lots of fresh at Baker in December, nada at Breck in January).

In general, the east-west zonal pattern is changing to favor the west for at least the next week or so, which is a good sign for those of us living/traveling west.

Utah looks good for the next week:

WEATHER DISCUSSION
Snow totals have exceeded the forecast amounts from this morning.  7 to 10 inches has accumulated in the higher terrain from Provo through SLC to Ogden.  Snowfall has tapered off as of now.  We'll see unsettled weather through the weekend with continued periods of snow which could add up to a decent amount.  Potentially up to another inch of water which is around 8 to 10" of snow by Sunday night.  Highs will remain in the low to mid 20s and winds will be light to moderate speeds from a southwesterly direction switching more south then southeast as the storm to our south moves east.
EXTENDED OUTLOOK
As the storm to our south that is just reaching far enough north to affect us moves east, another trof comes in right behind it which is followed by another and another.  This current picture from the models is encouraging for periods of snowfall through the week.

The Jackosn forecast appears similar

It was snowing in PC yesterday at dawn, snowed all day at Sundance and everywhere else, and today there was a foot + of fresh at Sundance, and it was still falling.

Dunno how JH is doing, hope they're getting some as I am headed there tomorrow!

Looks like it's come just in time to coat the place in white for President's.

I don't know about everywhere else? Sundance definitely got the best of this storm.   It was sunny all day at Powder Mountain, but raining hard at the airport @ 4pm.  I am sure today and tomorrow will be good days!

What's the good word on Jackson Hole?  I'm flying into Idaho Falls Thursday night, then driving to JHMR early Friday morning.  Skiing the holiday weekend, and buying my flights last minute, so I'm spending close to a grand on the flight alone!

I'm hoping I'll be rewarded with decent snow!

Hmm, Epicski gathering and no responses???  No one wanted to earn some good karma, I guess?  Well, I do, so I'll give others the scoop on JHMR after a hard day of skiing.

The key word is variable.

Jackson has been getting some snow, including a reported 13 inches in the last 72 hours.  I did, in fact, find some areas, including tree runs, with some decent powder.  Nothing thigh-deep or anything, but soft snow nonetheless.

Also, lots of nice bumps all over the mountain.  Soft, plenty of snow on them, just all around great.

Expert chutes were a little rocky, and tower 3 looked rough.  Some of the groomed stuff is pretty skied off, but other than that, I've been pleased.  Exposures make a huge difference, and today was blue bird, with lots of sun.
