Arrived in Vail PM of 1/27. Stopped in along the way at Dumont at Harb Alignment shop and met Chris Brown. I couldn't believe how high an angle he could tip to in his ankle high boots.Very nice guy. Off to the Roost for two nights before my ski buddy arrives and rescues me and puts me up in his spacious Avon condo. Big news, Roost to be renovated not torn down, dirt baggers rejoice. Still at $129 a night I don't think its cheap.
Skiing Tues &Wednesday really cold and snowy; fantastic and nobody is on the mountain. Skiing boot deep on the front side at 11 AM making fresh tracks! Parked the car at the Transportation Center garage Tuesday . Ouch $25 a day. Left my 20 year old Dirt Clogs undr the bench in the Skier's Service Building because I didn't want to spend $10 for the day basket, when I went back to take off my boots at the ned of the day, my shoes aren't there! A little panic sets in for a few minutes, but the kid behind the basket counter retrieves my shoes for me. Apparently they now pick up anything under the benches. After all this is Vail, and they are selling baskets. I was relieved I didn't lose my shoes and on the next day my buddy buys a basket for the week and I use his basket.
Skies clear on Friday and Vail starts to get crowded. Saturday even worse, perfect blue bird day and the place is jammed. Ski alot on the front, one day Blue Ox is groomed another day Riva Ridge. Spend a fair amount of time on Zot late in the PM trying to make some decent bump runs most days. Catch a bad cold about midweek. Energy level not horrible, but now I'm coughing and stuffed up and ticked I'm getting sick . Part of my Vail experience is watching my buddy and host purchase everything I wish I could. On this trip:
New pair of Kastle 88's
Dale of Norway Sweater
Remote Control boot heaters
I really like the simple graphics and white color of these skis. I know am in a bigger boot, so I didn't get to ski them. On the last night we watch the Steelers come from behind and win a spectacular Super Bowl. Pretty great way for two Pittsburghers to top off a great week. Vail for me always seems to deliver a great ski experience.
