Features I Miss - Page 3

Who's online is back ? I looked.  Still can't see who's online. Where ?

The green dot next to your user name on a post shows you're online.  If you're offline it's a white dot.

Yeah, the green dots in a thread is nice to have back.  I was looking for the who's online list that used to be at the bottom of the forum directory page. Listing all members who were just or are currently online.

A top of page button near the bottom and the calendar and it's birthdays would be nice to see back.

This one should be simple and save a click.

Put an "All New Posts" button on the personal home page.

My normal method of browsing the site is;

Home Page

Forums

All New Posts

this would eliminate the middle step.

I miss actually being able to USE Epicski while I'm at work...like every other forum I frequent......

Honestly, I had higher hopes myself, and I'm a bit disappointed in the new look, feel, and functionality of the EpicSki forums at the moment. I know that there was a "beta" site with a few testers for a short time, and that several major issues and a few minor ones did get addressed. I think that the belief was that the site was "ready enough" for the next phase--going live. In retrospect, I think we could have waited longer. And I suspect that some of the suggestions and concerns of the testers should have been given more weight.

Nevertheless, here we are. We've got some good new stuff, with great potential, but a lot to work on. We have a great team, dedicated and capable of making it work. I urge everyone in the community that is EpicSki to continue to offer your feedback on everything--good or bad, big or small. I believe that the tech team will quickly re-prioritize its checklist according to the feedback we give them.

I know that the stated mission for the move was first, as much as possible, to keep the functionality and aesthetics of the forums, that we universally agree are the core of EpicSki. I don't think we've done that as well as we might have, and I'm eager to see the improvements over the next few days and weeks.

In any event, here's my quick list of features I miss so far. I consider them all important:

  • Members list
  • Who's on line? (List, and those "green dots")
  • Who's viewing what?
  • Post counts
  • Member location
  • How many viewers in each section and thread
  • Signature lines
  • Clean "avatarless" screen
  • EpicSki signature "brand" colors--with contrast and style options
  • Quote button (or ability to use codes)
  • Smiley shortcuts
  • Variable column width
  • Who is the newest member?
  • Multiple recipient PM's
  • Editing time limits
  • Small, unobtrusive "edited" notices (with a brief time window that required no notification)
  • Post preview
  • Easy font size changes
  • Font colors
  • Pages that reopen at the bottom--not the top--after submitting a post
  • Links that open in new windows by default
  • Moderator tools (so that our moderators can continue their awesome work!)
  • ...

Like others, I'm liking the bland, white look less and less. I regret that we have not (so far) retained the "branded" look and feel that are expected of EpicSki. (I'm particularly close to this, as my father-in-law was a pioneer in the field of branding and corporate identity. He was especially keen on the importance of color as a brand identifier, helping huge corporations spend mega-dollars to associate themselves with a particular hue. He was responsible for, among other things, the fact that we associate Coca-Cola with "red" almost as much as the famous logo itself, having designed the company's early corporate identity program many years ago. He spent the latter part of his career traveling the world as a design and corporate identity consultant. I spent some fascinating hours picking his brain about this stuff in the past few years. I know exactly what he'd say about this, if he were still alive!) The whitening of EpicSki is unattractive and hard on the eyes (in my opinion), but just as important, it wastes an asset of EpicSki that many companies would have spent enormous sums to create--a color that has become our "brand." Let's bring it back. Please?

None of these things on my list are exotic. All are just standard, expected features in Internet forums--and features that we had until last Friday. And I'm sure that all of them will be part of EpicSki once again. I can't wait!

Best regards,

Bob

PS--I rarely use spell check, but as it has come up as a problem, I just tried it. It seemed to work fine for me (although it wanted to change the very name of EpicSki!). Has this problem been addressed? If so, ... Yahoo--we're on the way!

This is one of the more complete lists of "things missed"  and I'm seeing a lot of it accomplished.

I'd like to thank the huddlers for the effort.

I'm looking forward to seeing what the next push will bring.

Coming in late here but I've been using search a bunch to check potential spring deals.

I may be just a screw up but I want:

Search results displayed by most recent first.

Search results showing thread starter.

If I'm researching skis current reviews hold a lot more interest than 4 year old ones, and a review from daug or other epic famous reviewers gets my attention over billyjoeintampa.

just a minor mispelling is all.

stevesmith7,

Have a look at the Advanced Search tutorial. You can select results to display the most recently active threads first.

5) In this section of the Advanced Search form, you can sort results based on relevancy, number of replies, thread start date, or last posting date.  You can also sort those results in descending or ascending order.  The default setting is based on relevancy in descending order with the most relevant terms at the top (based on keyword density).

Since you mention it, I'd vote for changing the default setting.  I find the old vbulletin default of last post date to be much more useful than sorting by "relevancy", most of the time.

TGR just updated their site and it works fine. Took about a day to fully figure it out. Fire Huddler, get rid of this lame software, that even 4 months later is still experimental, and get whoever TGR used.

Look what's happened since the change - right now there's 16 BB and 50 guests online - that's pathetic - even loserzone.com alleges to have more than that. This Huddler thing is "how many useless features can we incorporate while deleting (or taking months to figure out) how to put back the basic stuff everyone liked.

And oh, while I type, this box keeps on moving around covering things I want to see, while some advertisement bar is moving around over the top of it - who thinks this crap up?

Like I said long ago - you got sold a bill of goods on this one.

That TOP button would be a nice feature. TGR had theirs lost in the shuffle ,in place but not active and they got theirs sorted out in a few days

Something about reinventing the wheel and making it LESS round?

TGR uses VBulletin, a newer version of what we used to use also. When Epic decided to define the new direction, unfortunately VBulletin would not integrate, that was the first place we looked (we didn't want to have to reinvent the wheel). We know the new forum software doesn't have some of the bells and whistles of the newest VB but look how much it has improved in the short time we have had it, the same amount of changes took years with VB and just months for Huddler.

I miss the way the old Epic notified me of updates to the treads I subscribe to.  It used to send my email account one notification when there was a new post to the thread, along with a phrase saying something like "there may have been more new posts after this one, but I would not be notified of them until I visited the thread".

Now, if 20 new posts have been made in an hour or so, I get 20 email notifications instead of just one, thus gumming up my email.  It seems that the only option is to get notified once a day or once a week, neither of which sits well with my Epic addiction and all-day proximity to my computer.

Sorry Bonni---I miss being able to turn off the signatures, so that I don't have to see those little quips (which were all good the first time) over and over.

Did the "Currently active users" stat go away as well as the green circle?  I can't seem to find it.
Sibhusky, it did go away temporarily.  I posted here about it http://www.epicski.com/forum/thread/83865/hey-you-guys-messing-with-epic/60#post_1109709
I believe it will be back soon......
I knew the green ball disappeared, didn't know the list of online users had gone away as well.
It's all in the same gum ball, sibhusky.

BTW, I want to personally thank you for your outstanding bug reporting. We can thank you for quite a few upgrades!
speaking of bug reporting, the bug I reported about Command W not closing a tab in Safari seems to have gone away since the last push.

I've got 150+ images and I like to be able to utilize them in more than just the post in which I first used them.

I'd like to be able to select from my uploaded pictures using a thumbnail type dialog. Maybe a third tab on the Add Image Dialog. This way I could re-use a picture without having to find out what I called it 5 months ago. If I can find it at all.

A thumbnail view of more than just the last ten (or so) last uploaded images would be nice, too.
All in all, though, I think the interface of the site is great. You guys are very responsive.

An upgrade in the photo gallery software is in the near future. I'll be sure the dev team sees your post. Thanks!
Mastersracer, it is not very intuitive, but if you go to My Profile you can see all the images you have uploaded.  Click on View all images, and you will be shown (1-by-one) all of your uploaded images with a shortcut name.  So you can use them more than once.   A thumbnail view of say, 20 images at a time would be a real bonus.

That would be a new feature, and a great improvement over vBulletin.  In fact the ability to upload images and host them on the site is an upgrade from what we had.
