I've been skiing at Jackson Hole 3 or 4 times over the last dozen years, but have never been able to take advantage of the out-of-bounds skiing. With all the cliffs, I haven't felt comfortable about simply heading through the gates into Cody Bowl or elsewhere, but the ski area back country guides are pricey to say the least (> $300/person/day). Anyone have any other advice? How about a knowlegable ski buddy for a day that wouldn't break the bank? I'll be there Feb. 11-14, 2009. Thanks.
You might want to read this, end to end. Then hire a guide:
BTW - I went o/b in Rock Springs there 10 days ago. Visibility was dicey but I'd been back there with a guide in the past. It helped, but was still probably not a great decision. Even some locals can get disoriented and lost if bad weather juju suddenly rolls in. It spooked us back there a couple times and it really creeps me out after reading this kind of thing.
Here's a couple pics I took (WHEN THE FOG CLEARED A BIT)!
I went to Jackson Hole the first time this year. Nothing's cheap anymore. But we had a lot of fun. I've never been there before. I'm looking to try some additional places this year anyone have any suggestions. I'm from Europe so I've been looking through some great web sites. I live in Arizona. I'm not a girl who lives to dangerous but I like it steep. Skiing and snowboarding. Moguls, downhill all the way.
