Snowbasin 01/25-27/2009

We (family of 4 Tahoe skiers, Mrs., me and 2 kids of 9 and 17 years old) hit Snowbasin for the 1st time this last weekend (made it kind of a long one with Mon and Tue included). It is not out first time in Utah - for the last several years we skied LCC/BCC areas on our trips to Salt Lake , and this year we decided to explore the other side of the town...

Anyway, the trip started on the wrong foot - our carefully planned schedule was altered by a fog in SLC airport and our 6pm flight from OAK has been canceled on Fri night at 11pm after 5 hours of "another 30min" delays. Luckily I was able to get us an early morning flight departing at 6am on Sat from SFO and after 3 hours of sleep we've got to Ogden on Sat 10am - all are tired and very sleepy.

Before the trip I contacted 4ster, who is a Snowbasin local (and, as it turned out, a very experienced ski instructor with many years of managing ski school in one of the Tahoe resorts and now being 9 year veteran in Snowbasin ski school) and he offered his help in guiding us on the mountain .

So, once we arrived, I got the phone call from 4ster that it is raining up to the mid mountain and the conditions are getting worst and he is thinking of wrapping it up and call it quits. I have to admit that we all were relieved to hear that since all we wanted to do is to take a nap.... So, no skiing on Sat ....

In the mean time it got colder and by Sun morning it was snowing all the way down to Ogden Canyon mouth.

Once we've got to Snowbasin Sun morning and met with 4ster it was about 10"-12" of fresh, though wet, Sierra like cement, but fresh, and it continued to snow. Visibility was very low with a flat light and, boy, I was glad that we have somebody who knows the mountain! 4ster spent with us 4 hours showing us around and taking us to his "secret" stashes. We had a very god time and it was a real pleasure to ski with him - it looks like he knows not only every run on the mountain, but every tree, every bump and every jump! Without him, given the conditions, we would never be able to get to the "goods" in such a short time, or find them at all.. Thank you Jim for the great day!

Sun night it got even cooler and, with snow overnight, Snowbasin got another 10" of "Utah snow" by Mon morning. Armed with 4ster's tips and suggestions we had a blast skiing on Strawberry side in the morning and John Paul in the afternoon! Excellent variety of the terrain on both sides!

On Tue the clouds got cleared (kind of , with constant patches of fog/clouds and occasional snow) and for the first time in 3 days we were able to see around - impressive and beautiful peaks! Gates got open and I was able to get some "in-bound off piste" off the John Paul - very good terrain, with even better one if you hike.

Unfortunately, we had no camera with us to post pix, but here is the link to 4ster's TR, which has some shots that give you idea of what was there on Mon: http://forums.epicski.com/showthread.php?t=79689

Anyway, it was a very good trip and Snowbasin is a great mountain! We definitely will get there again.

Thank you for looking,

cfr

PS. The restrooms are great too !!!

Thanks for the props cfr, I had a great time too. You guys are all top notch skiers & know how to rip it up. Glad you got to hit some of the terrain that was closed on Sunday with some more Utah like snow. Today was snowing all day & a forecasted 1 to 3", turned out to be knee deep blower in alot of places.
Got some great runs way far out there in Strawberry this afternoon.
