Replacing my trusty Salomon Performa 9.0's...ideas please

My boots are about 10 years old and are approaching retirement. I have stuck with them because they were SO much more comfortable than any boots I had before them.

These are the black ones (one down from the race boot), with the customized fit obtained by heating them up and then stepping in to them. They are a 29.0, although I did wear a 29.5 for one week (thanks to Air France) which seemed slightly more comfortable (same length of boot iirc, but slightly higher volume.

Now I am having 2 issues: Both boots have pressure points on my inside ankles that are rubbing, and they are pretty tight around my calves (I'm a big guy).

So, 10 years on, for an experienced go-anywhere (but past his prime) skier, with wide feet and big calves.....where would you start looking?

What have been the big advances in boots over the last few years?

I'd like to do some research before going to the store.

do some research on finding a good STORE, not a good boot.

Odds are no matter how much you read, search, and obsess the store will know more, and be able to help you more.

your job is to find them.

most companies make a big, wide boot, just the boot fitter can fine tune the fit to you.

OK, a good fitter is the single most important factor when buying new boots: I get that.

IME most stores have a relationship with a limited range of manufacturers and/or stock a limited range of models. They will doubtless do the best job they can with what they have got.

If there are some specific brands/models that are likely to be a good fit (sorry!) for my needs, then I would like to be able to screen the stores on that basis, as well as the competence/reputation of their fitting staff.
