Looking to plan a trip to Zermatt in April of this year (2008)....March was nixed because of conflicts

Is it a good time to make a week long trip there?

Any lodging recomendations for a group of four....two rooms??

Any other bears plan to be there?

Should be great in April. They're having an excellent snow year so far. There are hotel, meal, lift ticket packages in April. Check out: http://www.zermatt.ch/e/packages/04.html.

I spent a week in April a few years back at the Hotel Cheminee, http://www.hotelcheminee.ch/. Lots of German on the site, but check out their package --click on Pauschalen. I'd recommend the hotel. Good sized rooms, good food, good (for Zermatt) value, great location opposite the Sunnegga lift entrance. Bus stop is right outside the door.

Also stayed at the 4* Hotel Julen once. They too have a package in April. Very nice hotel, not as good a location for lift access, not as good a value. I didn't think that they were all that welcoming. I'd go back to the Cheminee.

Also check out the Alpen Rose. Small 3* hotel near the Klein Matterhorn lift. I like the location for lift access. I don't think they offer a package with a lift ticket, but their pricing is reasonable given the location. Zermatt gets pretty much everything right. When you factor in all the variables, it's very tough to beat as a Euro ski destination.

We stayed at the Hotel Bella Vista in late March/early April 2006. I would LOVE to return; it was a wonderful family-run hotel. It's a short walk up from the center of Zermatt, giving you fabulous views.

We stayed at the Hotel Metropol, which was very nice, but not cheap. Rooms were well appointed and there was a indoor heated pool, hot tub and sauna, breakfast, and central location. There is also a very nice sitting room with library for the evening. The owner (Gabriel Taugwelder) is extremely hospitable (and is a direct descendant of the guide for Whymper's 1st ascent of the Matterhorn!).

If you have the money to spend take a look at the Apparthotel Zurbriggen. Yes, it is owned and run by that Pirmin Zurbriggen, and is architecturally spectacular, but very pricey, but if you are 4 people a 2 bedroom flat may not be that much more than 2 hotel rooms.

you may also want to consider uk chalet companies like VIP who's prices drop off as you get into April - particularly 2nd half!

I would second Hotel Metropol. we stayed there during easter 2004. other than what dp mentioned - it is also very central. right next to sunnega and a ski shop. 5 min from the trains and downtown. also on the bus route to KM.

Thanks for the help guys! I think we are back to going to Zermatt in early March...we are looking for an economical apartment for the three of us (and trying to find a 4th person to goin us). I have found one for about $1500 US...split three ways is not bad.

I stayed at the Hotel Julen both times I was in Zermatt. Rooms are great, and they have an incredible Spa with pool, etc. which was a very nice benefit. I don't remember the costs, however it was well worth whatever we paid.
