Ski Roundtop - York County, PA

York keeps getting smacked by the ice storms once or twice a week, but the new (relatively) snow guns and competent crew manage to put a couple of inches of fresh machine-made down every night.

The tops of Minuteman & Exhibition get scraped off after 4 or 5 hours. The rest of the mountain (hill) is PA-Packed-Powder.

It's funny . . . conditions at roundtop can be described as "average" at best. But now that I'm a tiny bit better skier, I can ski the fluff on the sides or pick my way down between the ice patches. I appreciate roundtop (and the fact that skiing is 30 minutes away) more than I ever have.

Roundtop is a lot of fun if you like racing or bumps.

You going to be up for demos on Sat.?

I think I'll do that in the morning then make like CSA cavalry and dash west.

I'm going Saturday, but know nuhhhhthink (Sgt Schultz) about demos.

Just went to their site and it says "Mega Demo" day. I guess I'll see you there!!

I'm large, but not tall and wear a green/black Columbia jacket. I'll be wearing black pants and skiing RX8s.

Look for a Salomon/Obermeyer (brick red and tweed) combo with really nasty funky looking beetle green Dynamic SL skis and lime green boots.

Which is better Liberty or Roundtop? I will be in Gettysburg in maybe two weeks plan on skiing while there.

Liberty & Roundtop are pretty similar. If you're in Gettysburg, you should consider Liberty or Whitetail as they're closer.

It's PA skiing . . . don't expect Vermont.

They're blowing snow like hell right now with all this cold. Everything's open and it's all machine-made. With that said, this equipment they're using is . . . not bad.

The conditions were: Weird but EXCELLENT.

The MM snow is really small-flake, and really dense. Skis with a lot of structure (including the Elan GSXs I was on in the morning ) were just plain not happy.

Otoh the Pogo Sticks were a hoot.

Had a great time skiing with comprex & batgirl, and watching you two do NASTAR.

Went back today and the snow was similar. The mid-fats that we demoed yesterday were definitely helpful.

I'm sorry we didn't get a chance to play more. Keep them toes warm, ya hear?

The conditions on Barretts on Sat. were actually my favorite flavor of Eastern skiing, cold, grippy, in a snowy tree room with lots of terrain features to play with.

Bumps at the top of Ramrod were very nice yesterday (Monday). For this area conditions are very good right now. It also snowed all day up there yesterday.

Skied for a few hours today, 11-3. snow starting to firm up, but can still be called packed powder. A few icy spots appearing hither & yon.

Bob - I'll be there tomorrow, getting in around 11. As I described myself above:
