What to do with barely used recent (2007) skis?

I am going skiing with a group to Crested Butte in early February and we are debating renting skis, but for some in the group prices are equal for buying (skis+bindings+mounting) or renting skis (due to the slow economic year perhaps) and we all have boots. If there's a useful and deserving charity that we can donate them to in the area, it makes sense to buy and then donate the skis (if bringing them back is deemed to be too troublesome). Otherwise we would rent (to attempt to reduce waste).

Any ideas?

I should say that I did search and found a similar topic but it was for skis 10 years old, and it was suggested that furniture was an appropriate use.

Perhaps find out if there is a local school or organization that provides gear for under-priveledged youth (local ski stores may know of one), or donate them to the CB Ski Team, they probably hold a ski swap to raise funds.

If they come with Marker Comp bindings, you can donate them to me.

I take it you must have your own set but just don't want to fly with it?

Otherwise why not just keep them for now? Who's to say your not going to go ever again. If few years pass then dump them to a charity.

Personally if you got your own set I'd bring them with. Being on skis your comfortable with will only enhance your skiing experience.

We do have our own set but were concerned with risking them to the airlines (silly, I'm sure). We got a bit worried from the horror stories on here. Padded ski bag? Sportube? What do you give as the chances of a successful undamaged arrival?

You may read a lot of horror stories here about ski travel and maybe it's gotten worse this year, but that's because the horror stories make good stories, not b/c it happens that frequently. How frequently I can't say, but FWIW I've flown with skis about 6 times in the past few years, never any damage, with regular padded ski bags (not sporttubes) stuffed with clothing for extra protection.
