Additional FREE PARKING in Vail!

As per a notice sent out today to all Vail Mtn Employees...

VAIL OPENS DONOVAN PARK LOT FOR FREE PARKING
WHEN PAVILION NOT IN USE
(Vail)—Effective immediately, an additional free parking area will be available at Vail’s Donovan Park from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on days when the Donovan Pavilion is not in use. Access to the 70-plus space upper lot, located at 1600 South Frontage Rd., will be open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. No events are currently scheduled at the pavilion between now and Jan. 14. After Jan. 14, a sign will be posted at the entrance to the park indicating availability, which will vary from day to day, depending on the scheduled use of the pavilion, which is typically booked 30 days during the winter season. No placards or hang tags are needed to gain access to the lot.

The parking area will be serviced by the Matterhorn bus stop, which is located west of the park at the intersection of Matterhorn Circle and West Gore Creek Drive. The West Vail Red transit line services this bus stop to the LionsHead base area with service on the hour and half hour.

Use of the Donovan Park spaces nearly doubles the amount of available free parking on weekdays which includes the former Wendy’s restaurant site in West Vail. An additional 180 spaces are available along the North Frontage Road in West Vail Friday through Sunday and during peak holidays.

The decision to add Donovan Park to the inventory of free parking was made after determining other free parking areas have been filling on a regular basis.

Free parking on the South Frontage Road is allowed only after the Vail Village and LionsHead parking structures have been filled, which has occurred six times this season, down from nine overflow days year-to-date last season.

So it sounds like this is free all the time (unless there is an event there)? True? Or only when Lionshead/village are full?

Are there other good free parking lots in Vail? I've parked on the North Frontage rd, near the West Vail Exit (across from Safeway). I was wondering if there was some place better.

Is there a map of the parking areas? I'm going to be heading up that way in the next day or so.

Painful, but at least it's free

I drive by Donovan Park every morning between 8-8:30 on my way into work, and I have yet to see it even half full by then.

Fri and Sat will be the busiest days, as those tend to be the days most Front Range skiers/Epic Pass holders are skiing. Sundays are much quieter.

Be advised that there is also free parking at Red Sandstone School, right across from Lionshead, via the pedestrian overbridge, on Sat and Sun. It does fill up rather early.

Also, a few hundred yards WEST of the school, there is a small (approx 15 spaces) lot at Red Sandstone Park. It also fills early.

Thanks for add'tl info on free parking now that I see the 2 main pay structures charge $25 day!! Wasn't it $17 last year? I guess this is how Vail is making up after pushing the epic pass.

Remember that parking is operated by the Town of Vail, not by Vail Resorts. So if you want free parking, your options are these.

1) The old Wendy's lot in West Vail, served by the West Vail bus
2) The frontage road in front of the City Market/ Safeway, on weekends only, served by the same bus as Wendy's
3) The Red Sandstone Park, about 250 yds W of the pedestrian overbridge, on the Nth Frontage Rd (only fits about 15 vehicles)
4) Donovan Park, as this thread originally described.

Hey, I don't want to bring this thread back to life, but it's one of the top search results on Google for "free parking Vail"

I was driving around tonight trying to find a place to park here and the Red Sandstone Park and Elementary school on the north side next to the pedestrian overpass do not allow skier parking. There are now signs saying there is no skier parking allowed and that the lot is only for the school. May seem obvious to others but I'm new to the area so I thought I'd just give people an FYI.

The OP  posted old information IMHO.

I've been parking for free in Donovan Park for years.

The lot with 15 spaces (2 or 3 are marked handicapped) at Red Sandstone Park  was free 2 years ago.

But check as it was just posted otherwise.

Old info because original post is more than 4 years old....

OOps, I didn't notice that mr. fuzzy dug up an old post.

vail snopro OTOH is a great guy. He tried his best to show us hidden stuff

at Vail during the main Epic gathering 2 years ago. Weather unfortunately

was a bit off that day. The description was "frozen chicken heads" lol
