The JD Power surveys are worthless. Here's an excerpt from their 2008 Vehicle Dependability Study, which deals with 3 year old, 2005 model year cars, to see how they held up (press release here: http://www.jdpower.com/corporate/new...spx?ID=2008115
|The study also finds that five of the top 10 problems reported industry-wide in the 2008 Vehicle Dependability Study were also among the top 10 most frequently reported problems in the 2005 Initial Quality Study, suggesting that the problems are identified by owners during the initial ownership period, but have not been rectified by automakers during the three-year ownership period.
The problems include:
- Excessive wind noise
- Noisy brakes
- Vehicle pulling to the left or right
- Issues with the instrument panel/dashboard
- Excessive window fogging
#1 is Excessive wind noise? Seriously? As another example, the first year the Hummer H2 came out, the Hummer brand was almost at the bottom of the JD Power Initial Quality Survey. The top complaint was poor gas mileage. Wow, I'm shocked to know the Hummer gets bad mileage, never would have seen that one coming.
I want to know 1 thing, is the car going to break. JD Power doesn't tell you that, it just tells you how happy a bunch of uninformed consumers were with their purchase.
The point of this is that yes Subaru ranks mid-pack on the JD power survey, but since they don't bother to publish the specific complaints to the general public, we have no way of knowing if there are valid complaints or silly complaints. And Subaru does do very well in Consumer Reports which actually publishes the breakout of where the problems were by model and year.
So, take it and all the anecdotal evidence with a grain of salt, but make sure you understand what's actually being published in any of these surveys if you plan to use them in your decision.
