Very simple and durable devices. They will last many years with care. Care= keep battery compartment clean and dry. Don't leave batteries in during off-season, avoid drops to hard surfaces.
With regard to some of the earlier conversation, I have seen Trekchick ski on terrain that, if not inbounds and controlled, would fall into the backcountry gnar category. Even so, you don't have to be involved in ski mountaineering to be using safety gear and become trained. I strongly agree with Bob that the much backcountry is on relatively low hazard terrain, at least it is for me. I always thought a key concept to backcountry safety was controlling your exposure to risk. As terrain gets increasingly risky greater assessment skills are required to mitigate exposure.
