Put it in a gift certificate toward a private lesson. Guaranteed to make your cousin a better skier.

To get that kind of guarantee with skis alone you have to spend at least $800.

He is still skiing 1995 k2 5500 straight skis.

He doesn't like to break a dollar so he will never spend $800 on skis.

My reply was tongue-in-cheek. There's no guarantees no matter the price tag.

He is in need of an upgrade no doubt. Loved those 5500's.

Something tells me the Speedmachine & 1200 is too much ski for him, although you failed to list the length of the 1200. I've nver heard of the Pure Heat so the im70 would be my shot in the dark. User friendly and slightly more versatile than the opposition.

Better yet, buy used. More selection at similar prices. For example...

(^coupdevil's 172 Contact 11, although it may be a little long)

Or, check fleabay for an 06-07 Fischer RX8 (the orange one). Always a crowd pleaser.

I've skied the Nordica SM 14. THAT is a sweet ski and a killer deal on it!

He is an intermediate skier. Will he be able to progress on that ski or will he be fighting it all the time?

Speed Machine 14: ""Speed lovers, experts looking for race-level performance in an all mountain ski"---too much ski AND a size too long (as skis are made longer they are made stiffer)

Head iM70...the Monster series is not a good choice for hard pack.

Pure Heat might be a good choice and good size for him.

XRC1200 is an advanced ski, but in 163 cm would be OK. No longer/stiffer!

Ixrc's are 170's

Cross the Speedmachine and iXRC1200 off your list. Too stiff for an intermediate. The iXRC1200 is now called the "Supershape Speed" and it is a stout ski.

I would 2nd this recommendation.

RX8 is a great ski for a progressing intermediate. It will forgive a little bit of old school, but really rewards modern technique. Great on eastern groomers, quick edge-to-edge, tenacious edgehold, stable at speed. 65mm waist, so not so hot off piste.

'08's are currently $350 or so ... should be able to pick up some '07's around the $250 mark.
