I was the most extreme alpine climber in my party, more than once.
Now I have the experience and distance from events to see how overconfidence, and arrogance, lead to tragedies.
Let's hear it for the resort employees who opened up the terrain where Gross, Nodine and Randall were killed.
How long would they have their jobs if they erred on the side of caution, rather than opening up, and saved lives?
The patrolers I know at snowbird were extremely shakein up by what happened. Avy controls were carried out but sadly they didnt pentrate as deeply as they thought. Also in the gross death its was triggered by a hiking skier. Apparently someone walking on snow is a better twigger than an avy bomb for the current snowpack, but quite simply this is not in the method of operation for patrol.
They bombed, they did ski cuts, nothing moved or it didnt move enough to warrant in they very expert opinion that baldy should have been opened. 99 percent of the time they would of been right. That day they were not. I know snowbird patrol they are amoung the best there is. Your posts are a disservice to the countless hours that they have dedicated and show no knowledge of the subject matter. If you going to criticize someone at least be intelligent about.
