skis swiped...need to replace $%&#!

Went out night skiing on new years. Ran out from the bar to get one last run in before the new year hit and my PE's (179s) were swiped off the rack. I've used them twice so far. Needless to say I was fuming but what can you do?

Now the question. I won a free pair of 07-08 volkl ledges earlier in the year but have yet to get them mounted with my extra bindings. I'm an east coast skier but will be working out near Tahoe all winter so I want something that will handle there and back home on the ice. I know the ledge is supposed to be great on the ice...I'm a little worried about powder though.

Should I just cut my losses, mount the volkls and be happy I got free skis, or trade them in for a couple hundred bucks and fork over more cash to get a better ski? I liked the PE other than the graphics and I really don't want to spend even MORE money on new skis again. Any cheap twin tip I should look at other than the PE? More all mountain skier than park and pipe, but I do dabble.

advanced intermediate, 6'2, 185 pounds FYI...can do double black but still a little uncomfortable on them.

Last season I bought a Seirus NoJack ski lock and have been very happy with it.

Could be broken easily with the right tools but makes it inconvenient for thieves, so they may tend to go to the next pair.

volkl mantras are a great all around ski

thanks for the recommendation, that's a little more than I wanted to drop though. Having already bought one new set this season I don't really want to drop a lot more on an expensive ski...especially when I could replace my PE's for under $300.

I guess my main question is is the Ledge a decent enough ski or should I trade them in to assist in the cost of another...like new PE's or Addicts etc (which I can find all over the net for ~$250). I have some bomber bindings waiting to be mounted thanks to a friend.

Thanks for the ski lock suggestion. My friends ski on some seriously nice equipment and it was all sitting in the racks next to mine. I think the PE is just such a high profile ski that thieves know it right away. If the jacka$$ wanted some nice twins he should've grabbed the pair next to mine.

two thoughts:

www.getboards.com - they have a whole section on discounted twin tips.

The other thing - never ever ever never ever keep your skis together when you stash them. Always split them up. Fool proof? Hell no. But ski theft is a matter of convenience and if you make it a little big inconvenient for the thieves you are usually good. Well, at least better off than not splitting them up. This is especially true if you ski with an AT or tele rigs. That says, "I can be skied immediately" to a thief.

Thanks for the link. Found some K2 silencers on there dirt cheap. Read reviews on other sites, sounds like a slightly better fit for me than the PE...and they look MUCH better. Any reason not to get them?

The Ledges won't be that much different than the PEs in powder and crud (and I happen to think the PEs weak point is crud). Neither ski is the best choice for what you mentioned, but both are really good as all-mountain twins (perhaps the PE is a little more versatile because of the sidecut).

is there a ski that you would recommend then?

yes, they use cap construction and they are really soft.. plus they won't be the greatest ski in pow.. if you are planning on using them out west. maybe try to get some older armada ar6's or arv's. awesome skis, they will rip some park and some pow.

If you weren't playing with such a tight budget, I'd suggest the Mantra, as above, and also the Blizzard Titan Cronus.
I just sold a pari of Hart Scarabs(twin tips) that would have been ideal.

Another thought, check with the ski resort. PE's are very popular. Its possible that the doofus that took your skis thought they were his. There may be another pair similar to yours that were left in the racks.

Honestly, why would anyone steel PE's, when they can be bought so cheap.

Head Mojo 90's would fit the bill. see, amongst many many threads: http://forums.epicski.com/showthread...highlight=mojo

FWIW, I have a pair of 176s that I'm not using much; if you're interested, PM me...

I agree with Que. When I pop out of my skis, I put 1 ski and 1 pole 10 feet or so away from the other.

43 years skiing and never lost one yet.

Thanks for the advice. I went to the shop and traded in my ledges. My wife gave me the go ahead (not that I really needed it right??) to upgrade and spend a little cash. they had an awesome deal on some volkl bridge that I picked up. Skied on them last night and oh my god are they great. I think I'm in love. Thanks for the suggestions.

Skis which appeal to young hoodlums tend to get stolen. Get some Metrons.
