Ski Santa Fe on the cheap?

Hi,

I'm planning on skiing Ski Santa Fe in February. I'll be flying in to Albuquerque and either taking the shuttle or renting a car to get to Santa Fe. Does anyone have advice on finding relatively inexpensive lodging for a few days? Also, what are the options for getting to the slopes? I haven't been able to find any kind of shuttle or bus that makes the trip to the mountain. Is there any other option other than renting a car?

Any advice would be appreciated as I have never been to the area.

Thanks

Hi Sparky,

There is no shuttle to the slopes unless you book a hotel that has one.

There are a zillion hotel options in Santa Fe. One of my family's favorites when they visit is the El Rey Inn. huge hot tub and not downtown, so not as pricey as the more tourist aimed hotels. But this is the off season, so you ought to be able to find some internet deals.

There is a good shuttle service from ABQ airport to the hotels called Sandia Express. If you find a hotel with a shuttle to the ski area, then you might go for that.

PS, we have a great start to the season with plenty of snow for a base and an early opening of the whole mountain. Have fun!

+1 on the El Rey. Our company would book rooms there for out of town visitors when I lived and worked in Santa Fe. It's a bit outside of the enchanted downtown loop that's roughly circumscribed by Paseo de Peralta (for some reason that sounds painful...), but it's nicer than most, if not all, of the the other places out on Cerrillos road.

How about the Chappelle Street Casitas? We stayed at the adobe-style Best Western on Cerrillos last March when we took the SO's granddaughters skiing, but we'd like something with a little more charm and atmosphere this year.

I visited there two years ago when my wife had a confence out that way and found that renting a car for a few days was cheaper and move convenient than reserving a shuttle (as I was not with a group). I found public transportation was lacking in that area.

If you are going to rent a car and have time might be worth driving further north to Taos which has better reputation although I didn't make it myself. I was very happy with my experience at Ski Santa Fe, there was fresh powder, great views, overall very good skiing.

If you get up near Taos this place is about $20 per night in a bunk room: http://www.snowmansion.com/rates.html
Haven't stayed there since early 90s, but it worked for me then.

King Bill's Skinny Chicken Train

Pardon the sarcasm, wife tells me it's the lowest form of whit.

Just started in mid December is the Rail Runner a state run transit train. A bit challenging to get from airport to train but train easy to Santa Fe. Not decided if it will run weekends. TBD Friday 1/9/09. Sarcasm due to almost $500 million initial cost plus operating losses forever in a very NON metro area.

Car rental is best choice. Allows you to come and go as desired. Enables you to wander about for meals and treats.

El Rey is where we refer all Taos visitors heading for SF.

Thanks all, I appreciate the advice.

Does anyone know what the basic rental skis at the mountain are like? If the gear is ancient, I may rent in town instead. All I really need are decent shaped skis for a beginner (and boots and poles).
