TGR has some good info and good skiers, and I can put up with the language, because my mouth is not much better.
Two threads in particular put me off. One they all piled on about how useless a racing background is. Makes me wonder how well they really ski. In another, they ran around for days like a bunch of giggling 12 year olds because the had found an ad for...Gasp!... a prostitute! Real mature group there. She seemed like a nice honest working woman trying to look after her kid. Guess they have a bunch of self ordained hard ass guys who know little of how hard the world can actually be. |
And the HoneyBlonde thread was damn funny for a while. It got old. Much does.
You, for instance.
Take the stick out of your anal cavity and live a little.

Digging out the idiotic thread on racing would be supremely difficult for an old feeble brained guy like me. Just take my word that it existed.
Growing old beats the alternative. And please, that is a doctor's scope up my backside, not a stick.

And thus was born the infamous enduring feud between the Punani and Squawman and their various nefarious aliases that defined a whole era of douchbaggery. But I digress.

TGR demonstrates how long dumb luck can keep someone alive in a dangerous environment like the mountains.

Notable quote from the first and only thread I saw over there at TGR:
hey outlaw suck from my ass with a straw. That pretty much sums it up. Baby Boomers gave birth to Generation X, a club to which I reluctantly belong at 40. Those kids at TGR are, at best, the end of GenX, and are more likely in Generation WTF. |

TGR is for those folks who can't really carve with proper technique, but instead of taking a lesson, they instead decide to be disdainful towards those who can actually ski and instead flail about in soft snow and throw themselves off of rocks (they consider this skiing). They also like to walk up the mountain that aren't ski resorts so that they don't feel self conscious about their lack of form.
I think TGR is what happens when people from newschoolers.com grow up from punk kids to punk adults. |

Its interesting that philpug has almost 1200 posts on TGR.
For being as well respected as he is, I can't believe you all hang out with that hooligan!
Some of these comparisons are gold.
Speaking of people who can't ski.....
The image for your ESA last year was... gasp... a Maggot! Skiing.... Gasp.... Fat Skis! in Powder..... OHHH THE HUMANITY!

All this talk about the differences, yet the things that stand out are...........

- Many of us post on both forums and get along just fine
- All of us have a passion for skiing
- When Maggots and Bears happen to get together, a good time is had by all

TGR is a great place, I go over there every day to see what is going on. Besides...what makes you think I am 'well respected'?
I think most of the time I am being laughed at and not with.

REPOST FROM 2005
There is a world of difference between here and TGR. I used to be an avid reader of Epic ski. Daily, hourly, Heck, every minute. I tried TGR, thought they were crazy, always bickering, couldn't stand it.
I tried again about a year later. This time I really sat and read for a while and everything started to make sense with time. What I realized is that TGR is more about friends giving each other some crap. What they have is a community. A super close knit group of friends who ski together, hang out together, eat Thanksgiving dinner together. They open their doors to anyone and are excited (stoked) to get out and make turns with fellow mags (maggots, forums members).
Its true, they don't do alot of things that goes on here on epic. They don't constantly talk about technique and the up-unweighting. They don't rely on administrators and time outs when people get out of hand. From what little I've been reading here I've gathered that Gonzostrike and wbroun have had to take some time off. Thats petty, childish even.
The age is, on average, younger at TGR. There are, however, Moms and dad's and older rippers. There are College Kids, Ski bums and highschoolers. You might think TGR is irrational, but when a highschooler complained about his parents they gave him very real advice. The members are also of a different mindset. Their knees can still take harsh landings. They run Extreme ski camps (Gordy Peifer) They have tons of pictures posted in magazines (Grant Gunderson and others). They have lurkers (just hang out and watch, don't post much) like Chris Davenport, Kent Kreitler. There are many more industry superhero's who I don't know about and who probably don't want to be named because what they are, when the lifts close, are skiers. Nothing more, nothing less.
Now, I can only try to read epic ski. I was a supporter and I have a hard time sticking around this place. Why? Because every post is about the same thing. You try to do a good thing like the free gear thread from TGR and people mess it up by having conversations. Its a listing of free gear that no one can see because people ask questions and dilute the information. No wonder no one posts in it and it gets lost.
The language maybe different, but the words mean the same thing. You may think they are arrogant or mean to newbies (new posters), Gapers (same thing, people who stand around with their mouth hanging out staring at things) JONGS (Jerk off newbie gapers). But thats how they police. Instead of making Dchan move half the threads on the General ski page, they flame. People learn where to post. Around here it seems that people thinly veil snide remarks with a hint of kindness and its PC enough to slip through the moderator radar.
Is faster better? whats your favorite shell? Come on people. How many times can these questions be asked without them getting old? Honestly. Tell them to do a search, don't let people be lazy. Best wax for ESA? Softening Boots? DO A SEARCH JONG.
Its two different worlds. You may fit into this one, they (we) might fit into that one. You like your metrons, they like their Bro Models. You like Resorts with nice hotels, they like backcountry. You read ski, with its refined tastes, wine lists, car reviews and instruction. We like Powder, with its powder, Trip Reports, and amazing photos.
Its neither here nor there.
They live to ski. People here ski, but do you LIVE TO SKI? Forget about making a perfect turn, forget about how fast you are going, what color your coat is and does it look good on camera.
Go jump something, Go straight for a bit. Turn if you want to turn. Do what you want, not what your instructor wants, not what epicski wants.
Just go out and ski.

EPIC is for those folks who can't really carve with proper technique, but instead of taking a week long clinic they instead decide to be disdainful towards those who can actually ski and instead flail about on perfectly groomed blue cruisers and ski trees and bumps and other varied terrain (they consider this skiing). They also like to meet up the mountain that aren't posh ski resorts so that they don't feel self conscious about their lack of form.
I think PMTS.org is what happens when people from privateschoolers.com grow up eating glue and look for on-line dating. |

Not to be a hater, but to update a George Carlin quote for this application...
"Anyone who carves better than you is an idiot, anyone who straightlines faster than you is a maniac."

TGR is simply a place where people can express their opinions, share and gather info and feel like they are part of a community. Less moderation and control, but a place that encourages freedom and expression. When you have that freedom, you have to take the good with bad. Wasn't this country based on those values?

is there like a requirement this comes up annually?
maybe both sites do it intentionally to boost traffic after all the lurkers plan their ski trips?
who knows.
both communities have changed and evolved, I think both not for the better, but towards the stereotype that people here and there like to hang on the other.
a self fufilling prophecy if you will.
s'alright. I wouldn't trade the friends i made here and there or the times generated from them in the last (gasp) 8 years for the best ski forums in the world.
Happy New year y'all.

Epic is mostly people that ski, while TGR is mostly skiers.
On Epic they discuss short, skinny skis that suck, while on TGR they talk about long, fat skis that truck.
Epic is whine & cheese, while TGR is beer & peanuts.

flame away!

I'm just a moran who wanted to know...
It seems this scab had just healed over, and I just scraped it right off; now blood is everywhere. Sounds like the star-bellied Sneeches harbor some resentment for the Sneeches without stars.

What an ubelievaly naive and rude post.
I read both forums and actually prefer Epic but there are great skiers on TGR, there a great skiers here. Sure lots of the guys on TGR do climb mountains. I know I do and I'm positive that I know how to properly carve and can ski very well. I think the attitude over there is terrible, they waste too much time attacking newbies, they take vulgarity to a rather impressive level.
By the way, I skied some cliff bands yesterday and it is skiing
