This is where it makes sense to get informed and, at least "out west", make your own route decisions every day - even inbounds if you are skiing off piste. I mean, I gather Vail, Snowbird, Mammoth, Blackcomb, Squaw and others are forever off your list because they've had some big inbounds slides in relatively recent times?
Big terrain and a bad snow cycle introduce slide issues. Patrol can mitigate risk. But a few thousand acres of big terrain is not Disneyland. It just can't be.
I think it was at TGR that someone recently used the term "Backcountry Light" to describe how one might think about off piste skiing in certain areas. I think it captures the concept well. I don't really consider myself competent for much in the way of BC travel - but I've gotten myself educated enough to apply some day to day judgement when skiing off trail. In some places, it really does matter.
I'm bummed for JH & for everyone involved in this week's events. But everything I've ever heard says the JH patrol is top notch. I'd head to JH without hesitation - & hope to this season.
