Have had that happen. Code 3 race team, in the bar end of day at Donner Ski Ranch. About 5 cops and 7 firemen. As we are sitting in the bar we/one of us don't remember who glanced into the parking lot below us and saw two guys drive in and start looking in cars. One took out a hammer and broke a window of one of the firemens cars.

We had been enjoying our hot toddies in the bar and proceeded to join the two gentlemen in the lot.

First we got the ski gear back from the car with the broken window. then we looked in their van and found 9 pairs of skis that had just been taken from Sugar Bowl parking lot and Boreal. We had a little talk with the two fellows and then called the cops and had them arrested.

They sort of spoiled our fun when they decided not to resist the approx. 10 of us that were with them enjoying the night air at 7200 feet. Even though the statute of limitations are long gone still can 't tell the whole story.

probably walk up behind them (assuming they took them off the racks at the base), check them out (do they look like they would be skiing these skis? if its a guy in jeans, obviously not, but i want to make sure the person didnt accidentally take them) then maybe say something, and then grab the skis (so they dont get banged around to much since their my babies) and beat the crap out of him with my poles and or ski boot.

that was a long description... but i think it would be exciting to catch someone in the act and have a reason to beat them sensless with your poles

How often does this really happen? Are there any locking devices that you can use when you put your skis on the racks to go get a bite to eat?

Bas is a badass...that's one way to deal with it

I'd give him my boots and poles in hope that, like Jean Valjean in Les Miserables, he would reform and become a better person.

Interesting, has that ever worked?

I was thinking the bang, bang, bang shown in the video may have a more lasting affect. But hey that may be just me.

Beat them so hard their mother feels it, deep in the womb. I hear ski boots hurt to get kicked in the mouth with.

I got lucky once - went in to sign out from instructing for the day, came back out and found my skis (after about 5 horrible mnutes looking for them) on the ground with two other pairs right near the small bridge to the parking lot. Luckily for me there was a cop who had just pulled up to escort the days earnings to the bank (as he did every day). Thief must have seen the cop pull up and bolted.

I'd like to think I'm a badass, but the last time I got in a real fight, I got stabbed in the liver with a 4-5" long knife. I'd just take out a phone and shout something like:

"Yeah, I can see him at (location) and he's trying to walk off with my skis RIGHT NOW! He's (description, including what he's wearing)..."

I'm sure that would send the guy along, but I'd still notify the ski patrol and give his description...

What if it's Iceman?

If I ever caught somebody trying to steal my skis I'd shoot him dead and tear his flesh, wear his flesh and be reborn into new worlds where his flesh is the Key.

Ski theft is a sad thing for sure, but like anything else being ripped off, you have something of value unattended that's realtively easy to steal. What would I do, I really don't know, the best recourse would be to draw enough attention to the situation that security gets involved and the thieves end up spending the night in jail and more misery after that.

It happens a lot. Yes, there are locks, but amazingly to me, most people don't bother with them. I'm paranoid, I lock up every time.

Since I only paid $150 for my Legend 4800's from EvoGear, no big loss. I get another $150 pair of Dynastars or Rossis from EvoGear. But if someone jacks my Leki poles, they're a**meat.

locking up your stuff every time is such a hastle... and most people think that in the sea of racks full of skis (usually at lunch), your skis out of the thousands of others will most likely not be stolen...

forgot to mention - mine were actually locked when they almost got stolen. I came back and found the cable lock cleanly snipped. It'll keep honest people honest, bit if yheuy want your skis they'll get them.

What would I do? I'll never tell (but there wouldn't be any witnesses).

Theives are the lowest of the low. I had my facemask stolen on Christmas eve while waiting to go on the torchlite parade. The thing had been on my face & over my mouth all day. How low is that. I wish I'd had some disease I could pass along.

Follow them with my swix poles and I would make it hurt. If they did it once they have did it for others so it would be upon me to give that hurt others could not. LOL

I have acutally thought about this when I do leave my skis unattended, but not far out of sight or sitting in a place where I can see them and unleash fury.

I would step on their nuts with my boots, as hard as possible until I am 100% sure they are completely destroyed and useless. Nothing more.

pulling out my gat and firing a few rounds into the air works wonders. btw.. i am just kidding about that.

In reality once determined they are stealing your ski's.. a nice blast o pepper spray will ruin their day. Or yell at them from a safe distance. You just gotta determine is it worth it for you to do anything physically, legal or not.

Odds are they won't be taken - it's a gamble most people seem willing to take... I would just be so freaked out if it happened that I'm not willing to take the chance.

wow - they must have really wanted them! It's easy enough to cut those locks, but I feel like it's usually a good deterrent because there are so may unlocked skis to choose from!

Happened to me many years past @ Killington. Skis missing from rack resulting in my reporting the theft and getting a pair of rentals. As I was walking back toward the lifts with the rentals, I saw my skis on the shoulder of a person walking towards me. Dufuss also took my poles which were distinctly bent which is what I first keyed on. Result - arrest for taking my skis and the additional pairs found in his van. I explained to the arresting officer he had tripped as I was escorting him back into the lodge banging his face as he fell, thus the bruises. Serveral skiers there verified my story. He was convicted.

It would take way too long to destroy your boots that way.
