What skis to demo in Jackson?

Thread Starter
So...the question is, I'll be at Jackson Jan 31-Feb 6 and would love to try a couple of new skis. I'm looking for suggestions for powder days, semitracked days, and (groan) groomer days. I include the latter mostly as a diversion, but maybe the right ski could let me enjoy hardpack when off-piste is dangerous or lousy. Mostly, I'm keen on suggestions for great skis in great off-piste conditions.

Background: I'm a very good advanced skier...not in the caliber of a true expert by the standards of this group, but if a fall won't carry me to my death, I'll ski real steeps like Tower 3 and Alta Chutes (NOT Alta Zero!!) at Jackson, and Ruby Bowl at Blackcomb, and most anything off Cirque at Snowbird. I'm 6 feet, 190 lbs, 44 yo, strong in the legs, and prefer off-piste to groomed terrain, so all a ski has to do for me on the groomed is get me back to the lift in one piece.

I now have R:Ex's, obviously several years old, and B2's, the R:Ex in 188, the B2's in 184. Contrary to other posters, I've liked the R:Ex in deep powder, though my basis of comparison is limited! They are awesome for me in semitracked, and I find I can carry WAY more speed on them than the B2's. I use the B2's when the snow is more tracked out, or when I anticipate skiing bumps, and narrowly spaced trees, because the R:Ex's are too slow on my feet edge to edge for those conditions.

Fire away!

Thanks

Phil

Head Mojo 94 if you get really deep stuff. Head Monster 78 and Head SuperShape Magnum for crud & groomers.

When considering length, don't get stuck on the cm size...for your size and skill, decide which ski you like in the size range. I generally like the next-to-longest and ski those regardless of the cm size. That puts me on 170cm groomer skis and 188 powder skis in the models I own.

man, the possibilities are endless.

Untracked Ski: check out http://www.wasatchpowderskis.com/ if you want to demo some Lhasa Pows, or any of the other indi skis.

Crud Ski: Dynastar Legend Pro-rippin ski, or Mantra. Or the Bro 192.

Groomer: anything.

Seriously, demo any ski that looks good to YOU, read some reviews.
I could probably be some more help if you'd say not 'what' you ski, but 'how' you ski it (racer aggressive, mellow . . . ).

Edit: oh, and pay attention to cm size, some companies tailor or different kinds of skiers - don't listen to softsnowguy (no offense SSG).

Those are my two primary skis this winter for Jackson Hole. Both are available for demo at Teton Village Sports.

But despite my personal prejudices, there are literally two or three dozen other ski models that are really popular with the locals for powder and big/mountain skiing. There are probably more locals here skiing Volkl Gotamas than any other single model.

Volkl Katanas 190, K2 Hellbents 179, Pmgear Lhasas 186 - These are the skis I really would like to try if in Jackson.
Hope you get some deep pow for that though...
