Kids helmets or just helmets?

Kind of funny question in a way but, is there a difference between helmets for kids and helmets for adults? Thing is my kid is 6 yo and has a large (for his age) head. So it overlaps the adult helmets. So it opens up the possibility of more selection also should I choose an adult helmet.

I don't know enough about the testing and standards and whatnot but I'm curious as to whether there are actual differences between the helmets as far as protection and design. I know as of a few years ago there were few standards for ski helmets (like Snell rating or whathaveyou) and even fewer that passed Snell. I mention Snell because they are the most highly regarded testing organization for things like racing helmets and the like for cars and motorcycles.

Anyone know what the ratings are and if there are differences in adult vs kids or youth other than size?

Different headform for testing. As far as I know, the pass/fail impact acceleration values and other test limits are the same.

Get what fits him best - a poor fitting helmet is a poor protecting helmet. (Wish I didn't know that, the Omen I just got is such a nice helmet and now I have to send it back )

As far as I know there isn't any difference. My son was in a kids helmet the last few years and this year I found a clearance adult small for less money than a kids. It has better features, too.

If you look at the sizing in a particular brand, they overlap, ie a kids large is the same as an adult small.

My son loves it because he now has the same helmet as his dad (although many more stickers).

This would not explain anything, but kids helmet tends to run a bit lighter and definitely a lot cheaper -- at least for the same line.
