6'4" 215lbs 90% groomers with group 20% trying to get some off piste form

Hi

I have skied for 25 years, between 1 and 3 weeks per year, invariably in Europe but also USA. The pound sterling nowadays buys nothing so after having all this time rented I am now looking to buy a set of all mountain skis as it will be cheaper than renting for 2 weeks in Vail in Jan and again in Val D'Isere in March ( and possibly a few days in Bareges!)

I ski most of the time with a group or with my wife. My wife is only happy (skiing) on piste. The group tolerates me when I take 'short' cuts and I usually have a half day with an instructor / guide off piste to try and improve my off piste skills. On piste I can handle anything, it may not always be pretty but it's usually effective. I really want to give my self a good chance at improving in powder but also want to feel in control when I hit ice on piste...

So, I always really wanted recons, then I saw the Xplorers, then I saw movement thunder, then line prophet and am now thoroughly confused. I will be buying in UK before we go to Vail.

This is probably too general a question to ask but I will appreciate any advice.

Thanks.

Can't edit title once submitted... call it 85% on 15% off piste...

I'm confused too... 90% + 20% is like 110%, right? Patches O'Houlihan would be proud!

I know this thread is very old, but thanks to the wonders of search engines, people will continue to find it.

Just wanted to say that I faced the same choice.  I'm a pretty similar size and skier type (6'4", 235, a little more aggressive than you; i.e. I love Vail's Back Bowls in good conditions, etc.).  I had skied Recons as rentals for the past few years, but this year decided to buy.  I decided to take a flier and buy the Xplorers because I don't need any help on the groomers and I don't spend much time in bumps (if I can help it).  I figured a little more float in powder and crud might be nice.  We'll see...
