A co-worker of mine was discussing this unit, and I was curious if any Bears have used/seen one used before.

Professional big-mountain snowboarder Xavier De La Rue was caught in a huge avalanche last winter and credits an ABS backpack with saving his life.

Here is a photo of the start of the slide. Pretty scary:

The video of this slide appears at about 1:10 in this video. It is massive:

De La Rue's account of the incident is here:

This ABS website is also a lot more informative than in the OP:

These ABS packs are very expensive...around $1000 USD I believe. But a small price to pay if it can keep you alive, no? yes?

Moderator Note: (I will also move this thread to the Backcountry forum. I am also going to change the title of this thread from "Abssystem" to "ABS System" to make it a more relevant thread if someone does a search here for these backpacks).

I almost bought one, but I wasn't sure if I could get it on a plane. It was not DOT legal at the time, but I think it is now.

Thanks for the move moderator. The system is defiantly something to take into consideration hen venturing into avalanche possible terrain.

I looked at several designs and spoke with the reps 2 years ago at ISSW. They do work. There are some problems with the availability of the units and the propellent charge. There were also some problems travelling on a plane with them. I didn't much care for the packs that they were built into either.

I've rented them for tours in the alps on several occasions. A lot of guides and serious tourers in Europe swear by them. Never had to pull the trigger. I sure like the idea of it better than the avalung deal. I'd rather be floating on top than buried with a hose in my mouth waiting for someone to dig me out. The air travel details have been worked out. I'm planning on getting one this year.
