TR: Vail was epic (12/14)

Another epic day at Vail yesterday. Showed up at Riva Bahn early and rallied to the top. In line behind Seth Morrison again, thus confirming our choice of lifts. Headed for China Bowl but got disoriented in the fog and ended up in Sun Down. Thigh deep powder--slightly heavy by CO standards, but still great. Then back up to China Bowl & down through Jade Glade where there was at least some contrast. Great skiing until the trees ran out--then I ended up down in a hole and had to flail my way out...Over to Blue Sky Basin & down Lover's leap. Face shots there, but I made the mistake of skiing all the way down and having to slog the flats at the bottom in thigh deep powder. Fortunately, tele-dude showed up and broke trail for the second half. Another lap down Lover's then over to Northwoods which always delivers the goods. Several laps down Prima Cornice & North Rim then finally down as the leg burn started to settle in for good.

The Avalanche on LL that patrol described as 100x300 highlights the deep and heavy over in BSB.

Yeah the parking attendant said something about that when we left. Do you have any details? Hopefully nobody got hurt...

Found it: http://www.vaildaily.com/article/20081214/NEWS/812149983/1078&ParentProfile=1062&title=Vail%20skier%20caugh t%20in%20in-bounds%20avalanche

First-hand report from the mag that was caught in it: http://www.tetongravity.com/forums/s...d.php?t=143746

Wow, glad nobody got hurt. It must have happened right after we got off. Just goes to show how difficult it is to assess stability. There were certainly no signs of instability when we were on the slope--though I do remember feeling a little uneasy about the state of the cornice...

Way to get after it. I was stuck at work. Glad to hear nobody was hurt in that slide. Thinking about a sick day Tuesday. Anyone been to Beaver Creek yet?

Vail was indeed off the hook on Sunday. So deep, so untracked.

Even how much it sucks to get stuck in an avalanche, it's pretty cool to be on the news lol. But yeah, terrible weekend! THERE WERE THREE AVALANCHES!!!!

Yes, Sunday was one for the books in the Back Bowls. It may have been the deepest snow I've skied - thigh deep is about right. As you indicated, it was a bit heavy, and windblown in places.

Visibility was difficult in the morning. I almost unintentionally hucked a cliff in Rasputin's Revenge.

I found I needed to be in the steepest terrain to move. My skis, Gotama's, wouldn't float much in that stuff. It's the first time I wished I had Hellbents, Czars or Kuros.

Regardless, it's the Indian, not the arrow.

I found I could ski it okay, if I gathered good speed, in a low squat, powering my skis below the surface. Perfect balance was mandatory to avoid tip-dives. I didn't always succeed.

This wasn't Utah fluff. If you got caught in less steep terrain, you had to pole your way down. Exhausting.

After a morning of plowing, my quads were Jello.

Blue Sky closed just as we were headed over - due to the avalanche. Initially, they thought 3 people were buried. Fortunately, nobody was.

Skiing cut-up chunk in the afternoon, on the frontside, was light 'n easy by comparison.
