The Legend 8000 isn't a predominantly off-piste ski, so if you are looking for more float, you should consider a different ski rather than going longer. Since you just got off a pair of 168s, that should pretty much answer your question as to length. Unless your 168s were highly unstable, 172 will be fine for you. All of the things you are saying--intermediate-adv skier, not agressive argue for a shorter length. Powerful, agressive skiers with excellent technique go longer because they need the extra stability for the high speeds they travel at. For anyone else, the extra length is just an impediment (particularly in bumps and trees). Stay with the shortest ski that works for you. It will be easier to turn (particularly at slower speeds), which will increase your enjoyment of the sport and make it easier for you to improve.
